The Truth Behind the Torian Graham Saga

tg

You have to feel for Torian Graham. The kid just can’t get a break. He’s faced more tragedy in his life (off the court) than any 17 year old should ever face, and whenever it seems like Graham is taking a step forward in the right direction, things don’t seem to come together.

It’s hard to find stability when you jump from school to school as Graham has done over his high school career. He started in Durham Hillside, moved onto Word of God Academy and then onto Florida Arlington Country Day. His recruitment has been all over the map. He’s liked Kentucky, been pursued by Louisville, committed to NC State, decommitted from NC State and now yesterday’s happenings. If you follow our site, or NC State recruiting then you’d already know that Torian gave his commitment to NC State and only hours later renegged on that commitment, saying “something came up and I’m not committed anywhere.” This sent the media and the twitter world into a frenzy. Rumors were flying, people were criticizing the situation and Graham was firing back on Twitter, telling people they don’t understand and ‘who are you to talk about somebody?!”

So what really happend and who is to blame? Let us break it down for you.

On Wednesday night we at PackInsider.com received news that Graham had informed someone on the NC State coaching staff that he wanted to commit. He and the staff decided it was best for him to announce this after the NC State game against Northeastern, last night. We could have broken the information then, we had the story ready, but we were asked to wait until he made the announcement to break the news. We understood that and respected that. It was this kids big decision and it was only right that he got his day in the spotlight. We also waited because schools need a day to run all of these kids transcripts through and make sure they can qualify. A responsible school knows they need to have everything in order to qualify before they go and accept a commitment (that is soon to be signable). When you don’t give the school that time you risk embarrassment for everyone if it doesn’t work out. Well, the information got into the hands of the media big boys and as usual, it was prematurely broken. Once we saw that it had leaked, we went ahead and ran it as well. What no one knew was that there were, let’s say, complications with the admissions department  and Graham’s ability to commit. Out of concern for his privacy we won’t go into detail, but we will say that it was a matter of qualifications that forced NC State to not accept Graham’s verbal commitment.

This is sad because now you have media who have no idea about the situation starting rumors and painting Graham as the bad guy, or the kid who can’t make up his mind when the truth is, he made up his mind a long time ago. He wants to come to NC State. He still wants to be at NC State, it just cannot happen right now.

The good news is that NC State isn’t going to be out of the picture and they’ll hopefully at this point let Torian know exactly what he does and doesn’t have and what he needs to qualify. He doesn’t have to make a decision until Spring so there is a chance we see Torian recommit to NC State for a third time, however there’s always the chance that things don’t work out and he goes elsewhere.

We want to be as respectful as we can in this situation since so many outlets have been downright disrespectful and wrong to this kid. If people would just follow the rules and understand the stories before they ‘break’ them, we wouldn’t be in this situation right now. That being said, we know you’ll want to talk about this situation in the comment section and in our forums, but please note that any harsh criticism or disrespectful talk about Graham will not be tolerated. You will be banned.

This is an unfortunate situation for a good kid who just wants to play college basketball, just wants to commit to a school and be cheered like any other recruit. Give him a break.

Well put. We live in a Verucca Salt society where we want it… and want it now, daddy! The public serves as a second tier media with tweeting, Facebook, blogs and the like, where everyone’s the expert and if they don’t know something, well then they’re a Google genius. The media does little to no justice either, creating news where there is none, ‘breaking stories’ without fully looking into the subject matter or re-hashing a story because there’s nothing better to do. One hand definitely washes the other but I would put more on the media than the general public. I applaud your work, Packinsider; your diligence, dedication and passion are much appreciated.

TG, it’s obvious you want to wear the wolfpack red. Just stay strong and focused. You will work through your difficulties and make it happen. Don’t feel like you are out there by yourself – if you need someone to help, don’t be shy to ask for it.

I apologize for thall the idocy emotional responses by many yesterday. People didn’t take the time to think and anaylize the situation before opening their mouth.

OK Folks NOW is the time for all of you that jumped on the jugular yesterday after finding out that Torian had de-committed, to simply say “I’m sorry” just as publicly as you did yesterday. Nothing else’s needed- no excuses, no buts, just “I’m sorry”. Those that tweeted need to “Man Up” and Tweet their apologies. Torian, we got our feelings hurt and so did you and for that I am sorry. I hope you can still see through all of the passion and join State when the time is right. Also be aware that some of the comments may have come from UNC Fans throwing up false flags.

I hope he is able to qualify and that our Staff helps him within the rules and guidelines of the NCAA. It must have been very difficult for this young player to discover he doesn’t meet the standards necessary to attend the college of his choice. This is becoming true for many athletes in high school who do not put as much effort into their school work as they do their athletic skill building.

  • Sbthomason

Hey Guys, It may be that he is simply missing a class and not related to his GPA at all. Please comment on FACTS and not thoughts!

Even though it is a little embarassing for Torian and NCSU, I’ve no doubt that behind the scenes, he is being treated fairly and respectfully. Many colleges might have “cut corners” and thereby exposed the whole program and Torian to charges of fraud. For perspective, imagine this situation playing out in CH: I know, you don’t have to wonder.

  • wolfpacker1022

I still hope he comes to the wolfpack. He would be a great addition to the squad next season, and even if he has to reclassify for the 2013 season, its still better than not getting him at all. Take Lorenzo Brown for instance, he had to go prep for a year, then came back with better grades, and a higher basketball IQ. Yeah the coaching staff wasnt all that great at the time, but the man can play. Torian Graham is gonna need time to get his head together emotionally and physically. Things will be ok for this kid and he will shine whereever he chooses to attend, hopefully with the wolfpack. Good luck Torian, you have my support bro. I know you wanna be in that red and white. GO PACK!!!

  • lilharpman

Very good article, very responsible reporting. I am surprised Torian didn’t know of any, deficiencies but I do understand nothing is simple with the NCAA. I’m sure the young man knows what he wants and I wish him the best, even though he didn’t choose my school, UK. I look forward to seeing him play whenever it gets worked out.

Mr Graham, I don’t know if you read these comments or not, but if you do, I would like to tell you-PEOPLE ARE QUICK TO JUDGE and there’s only ONE that’s allowed to do that………..First, you’re seventeen………that’s a lot of “pressure” in it’s self, dealing with family, friends and school…………I would love to see you come to N C State……..and will be happy when you do………..your “path” is about to take off like a rocket………enjoy the ride

instead of Housewives of Atlanta….how about Recruits of NCState?

  • http://Accuracy Alan Pate

Just for accuracy, Torian himself “broke the news” the day before the game that was to precede his “announcement”. He even put it on You Tube.

Hey, I have disdain for the ‘big’ media outlets too…but, no one broke this story but Torian himself. He seriously jumped the gun and posted the committment to youtube, causing a very embarrasing situation for himself and State basketball. Everyone seems to want to excuse him from this because he has had a tough time. I feel for the kid too, but this was his mistake. Of course, everyone makes mistakes – and we should be willing to forgive. Hopefully, he gets the transcript straight and ends up playing D1 ball – preferably at State.

  • Coach

I coached Torian in baseball while he was in middle school. He was a wonderful athlete back then and has turned into a great young man. If he gets an opportunity to play for the pack you will be happy and honored to have him on your team. Good luck Torian. The Grove is behind you.
