The 2012 MLB draft concluded yesterday, and Junior shortstop Chris Diaz and Senior outfielder Ryan Mathews were both drafted. Diaz was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 11th round and Mathews was taken by the Oakland Athletics in the 27th round. It is highly likely that Diaz will sign with the Pirates and forego his Senior season.
Six of the 15 Wolfpack’s incoming recruits that signed LOI’s were also drafted as well. Pitcher Ryan Warner was drafted by the Colorado Rockies with their 3rd Round Supplemental Pick (128th overall). According to The Gazette, Warner has already agreed to a deal with the Rockies and will not enroll at NC State. Apparently the Rockies offered Warner a $363,700 signing bonus.
“I’m definitely going to sign for it,” Warner said. “I’m still kind of speechless. I’ve dreamed of playing in the majors since I was 5 years old. This is a dream come true, and getting picked by Colorado was definitely the key.” (Via The Gazette)
NC State signee Brett Phillips (OF) was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 6th round with the 189th overall pick, and according to the Tampa Bay Times, he will sign with them in the next couple of days.
“It’s such a relief,’’ Phillips said. “I can’t wait to sign and get my professional career started.’’

Signee Rowan Wick (C) was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 9th round with the 300th overall pick. Wick was drafted by the Brewers in the 19th round of the 2010 draft. BackingThePack did a great write up on the draft, and they think there is a good chance Wick sings his contract.
Signee Nicholas Pasquale (RHP) was the 4th NC State signee to be taken, getting the call from the Cleveland Indians in the 20th round.
Matt Tenuta (LHP), son of NC State linebackers coach Jon Tenuta, was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 25th round. According to Mike Blake of PrepsNow, Tenuta has already signed with the Royals.
“N.C. State recruit Matt Tenuta (pictured above), a lefthanded pitcher from Apex High who led the Triangle in strikeouts this season, has already signed with the Kansas City Royals, who selected him in the 25th round (763rd overall) today in the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft.” (Via N&O)
Finally, signee Brad Stone (LHP) was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 35th round.
