NC State Comes Out Flat, Loses To Maryland 51-50

Screen Shot 2013-01-16 at 9.11.43 PM

NC State came out anxious, impatient and overconfident against a gritty and physical Maryland team. That’s anxiety turned to dispair as the Wolfpack rushed their way through the first half, only scoring 16 points in the period.

While they picked it up in the second half and finally took the lead late in the 2nd half, they continued to make poor decisions down the stretch, leading to a buzzer beating lay in by Alex Len that gave the Terps the 1 point victory, 51-50.

NC State shot 31% on the night.

Stay tuned as we’ll have a full recap with stats and quotes coming soon.

Every Christmas present should be followed with a slap. Good times can quickly turn to heartbreak. Want to stay on top? Then you have to bring it every game.

This will be a good lesson for this team going forward. Don’t let up, I don’t care who it is.

Miami is going to be tough, FSU will bring their physical defense, UVA their deliberate half court style, and right now on any given night even the bottom dwellers of the ACC are knocking off the teams in the upper tier.

After playing such a great game last Sat. this game was a real let down. Guys got back into their bad habits and sloppy passing. The switch to 2-3 zone was good but the timing was too late.

If CJ had only stayed with Len instead of helping out :(

Just win out and beat the tar holes

I know it’s a bit early for this but I started thinking ahead to the post season.

The Pack is currently 14-3 with 14 games left on the schedule. Realistically I am thinking that we win half of those remaining games. Which would put us at 21-10. Depending on RPI, we would probably have to win a game or two in the ACC tourney to feel safe.

In a more optimistic scenario we win 10 of 14 games putting us at 24-7. Making us a lock for the NCAAs.

And in the most unfortunate NCStateSh*t type scenario, we lose more than we win to finish the regular season and finish 19-12. Which would most definitely require a ACC championship to qualify for the NCAAs.

This is a most perplexing ACC (and NCAA) this season. Truly anyone can beat anyone else on a given night.

UVA beats UNC, WFU beats UVA?

UVA beats Wisconsin, Wisconsin beats Indiana?

Kentucky beats Maryland, Duke beats Kentucky, NCSU beats Duke, Maryland beats NCSU?

@earl….. Seriously?! What am idiot there is no way we finish 21-10

Old wise sage Adam, please share with us your infinite wisdom. Maybe you’ve been a fan of the Wolfpack for 2 years and think you have some insight?

I’ve been cheering for this team for over 25 years. I’ve seen the few big wins followed by many head scratching losses. So yes I stick with the prediction for a .500 record for the remaining games. I hope I am wrong and they win out every game but then I live in the real world and not the fantasy one you happen to live in.

That game last night should have been a blowout. Maryland missed no less than half a dozen easy layups and a dozen open shots. Wood was off for most of the game and there was no continuity to our offense.

This is the team we have. An enigma. Look like national champs 1 game and then mysteriously turn into a pumpkin the next. No amount of love for the team will change what they are. All we can hope for is continued improvement heading into March.

I have been a Wolfpack fan since the days of the “old grey fox” (Everett Case) and I have, as a fan, reached the giddy heights of ecstasy (two national championships) and then been lowered to the tenebrous depths of depavity and despair. Last night was one of those night of depravity and despair. It was the worse game that I have ever seen a State team play. For Gottfried, it is all about continuing to change the “culture” of the team and getting the team to believe that it is supposed to win every game and to play like it and not go into games “hoping” to win. Great teams don’t have the kind of total collapse as the Pack did last night. The Pack has had several close calls this year because it has failed to take care of business early and eventually, it will catch up with you like last night’s game. Poor foul shooting and allowing team to rebound without impunity on the offensive board has been and continues to be this team’s achille’s heel. But one would think that with two seniors and two juniors making up the bulk of the team, this team would have learned some consistency. But I think it all goes back to developing a winning culture and getting players to believe that they will win every game.

Don’t get me wrong, I still love this team even after the loss. However, as you alluded, this team does not have full confidence like dominant teams have. Whether it be missing FTs or giving up big leads, this team has yet to develop that killer instinct.

Having said that, I will credit Maryland for playing a physical style of defense and hitting the boards hard. This team does give up some size inside and will struggle against longer teams. Looking at the remaining schedule, Miami scares me a lot and the UNC games will be hard fought. But don’t sleep on any ACC teams this season because there is a lot of parity out there.

“Tenebrous”? I don’t think that word has ever been uttered on this site :)

Should have been a blowout earl? How the heck can you say that when Maryland was holding their opponents to 38% FG
