NC State Sneaks Past Clemson 66-62

Screen Shot 2013-01-20 at 8.08.01 PM

NC State came out guns blazing, looking to put an awful loss to Maryland behind them. Rodney Purvis knocked down three early 3s and it looked like the Wolfpack was going to run the Tigers out of town.

Then Devin Booker stepped in.

Clemson’s senior forward was nearly unstoppable. Some of was NC State’s poor position defense in the post, but a lot of it was just a career night in the making for Booker who finished with 27.

Clemson creeped back into the game with solid post defense, holding Leslie and Howell to only 17 total points, but they forgot about someone. Freshman TJ Warren, coming off his worst game at NC State, was huge. TJ finished with 21 points, many of which came when no one else on State could find their stroke.

Bookers dominance forced State to go zone late in the second half, which slowed them down, but didn’t knock them out. Milton Jennings hit a huge 3 and NC State was tied up with Clemson with less than 2 minutes to play. That’s when Howell stepped up.  Quite for most of the day, Sir Rich slipped open when Clemson got lost focusing on Wood. Scott hit Rich on the slip, where he finished with the bucket and the foul.

It seemed like the Pack was out of hot water , but Jennings hit another 3 to bring it to 1, but that was as close as they’d get. State executed in inbounding it to Scott Wood who put the Tigers on ice with the FT shooting.

Stay tuned as we’ll have player and coach quotes, our breakdown of each player and game stats…coming soon!

It’s troubling how many players have record nights against the Pack’s defense. I was really hoping for Vandy to step up this season as a defensive force in the middle but it does not appear to be in the cards.

I think this team better focus on its zone defense because there have been struggles in the man to man D. This team does give up some length on the inside with Howell and Leslie against teams with true centers. Zone is the only way I can think of to neutralize taller teams.

UNLV ran quite the zone defense and Syracuse does a fair job of it as well.

@ earl……. Why do we need vandy? We don’t have a need for him this year…. Nex year I highly doubt it either. You are such a negative nancy

Were you dropped on your head as a kid? Anyone who has watched games this season and last can see that we do not have a true shot blocker in the middle. Case in point, Scott Wood is the team’s leading shot blocker.

Vandy is the tallest player in the lineup. One of the things you can’t teach is height and Vandy is the only one that has that. What about that does not register with you?

There is a huge difference between observations and being negative. Being unrealistic or overly optimistic does not make you the better fan.

Adam, your comments are more negative than Earl’s.
