Last night Crest High School’s Kollin Byers committed to NC State.  I spoke with the 2-star (247) 2016 Offensive Lineman this afternoon about his decision to commit to the Wolfpack last night.

“NC State was always my favorite team to watch growing up,” said Byers. “They have the best education program around and they have a great football team.  They just had everything to offer.”

Last night was the Alpha Wolf Showcase in the new Close-King Indoor Facility at NC State, and the NC State coaches had plans for Byers before he even arrived.

“They asked us to come up to the campus a little early before the camp started last night, so they could give me a tour,” said Byers. “After the tour, Coach Uremovich pulled us into the office and talked to me about how they liked my film, and he offered me.  We sat down with Coach Doeren and we talked, and I just went ahead and committed right there.”

Byers explained to us that he will be a “blue shirt.”  Basically what this means is that NC State technically isn’t allowed to recruit him.  That means no official visits to the school and no in-home visits by the coaches.  Instead of arriving in the summer for early enrollment, he will show up in August.  At that point he will be given a scholarship, but it will actually be counted forward to the 2017 recruiting class.  A “blue shirt” is technically able to play the season that they arrive, but Byers is already expecting to redshirt.

The future Wolfpack lineman has one goal next season.

“I’m just going to try to get big and gain as much weight as I can so I can be ready for my redshirt year,” said Byers. “It’s a big relief to know that I can finally end the recruiting process and know that my home is at NC State.”
