Here’s the NC State NFL Report for Week 1 of the NFL season.  Below we breakdown the performance of each of the former Wolfpack players in the NFL.  Nine of the 17 players that played yesterday, started for their respective teams.

Quarterbacks

Philip Rivers was incredible in the Chargers season opening 33-28 victory over the Lions.  He was 35 of 42 for 404 yards, with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.  Rivers’ QB Rating in Week 1 was 102.8.  It was Rivers’ 7th career 400 yard passing game.  His 2nd touchdown of the game was his 254th of his career, tying Dan Fouts for the Chargers record for most passing touchdowns.

Russell Wilson was decent in the Seahawks 34-31 loss to the Rams.  He was 32 of 41 for 251 yards, with 1 touchdown and 1 interception.  He also had 8 rushes for 31 yards.  Wilson’s QB Rating in the game was 90.1.  Wilson’s quasi-prophetic tweet about a victory over the Rams on Saturday, the day before the game, came back to bite him.  The St. Louis Rams were adamant not to let Wilson forget his failed prophecy.

Mike Glennon didn’t play in the Buccaneers 42-14 loss to the Titans. Wide Receiver  Carolina lost Kelvin Benjamin for the entire season, but

Wide Receiver

Jerricho Cotchery helped fill the void in the Panthers 20-9 Week 1 victory over the Jaguars,  leading the Panthers with 4 receptions, and he was the only receiver to reel in a touchdown.  Cothcery had 45 receiving yards and was targeted 6 times.

Linebacker

Stephen Tulloch’s first regular season game coming back from injury went well.  He had 6 tackles and a fumble recovery in the Lions 33-28 loss to the Chargers.

Manny Lawson started for the Bills in their 27-14 victory over the Colts in Week 1, and recorded 1 tackle.

Audie Cole had a fumble recovery in the Vikings 20-3 loss to the 49ers on Monday Night Football.

Willie Young had 1 tackle in the Bears 31-23 loss to the Packers in Week 1.

Nate Irving saw action as a backup in the Colts 27-14 loss to the Bills, but failed to record any stats.

Kicker

Kicker Steven Hauschka had 11 points in the Seahawks 34-31 loss to the Rams in Week 1.  He connected on all three of his field goal attempts (25, 27, 35), and both of his PAT’s.

Offensive Line

Guard Ted Larsen was listed as a backup heading into Week 1, but he started in the Cardinal’s 31-19 victory over the Saints.

Guard J.R. Sweezy started for the Seattle Seahawks in their 34-31 loss to the Rams in Week 1.

Defensive Back

Cornerback David Amerson had 2 tackles and 1 pass deflection in the Redskins 17-10 loss to the Dolphins in Week 1. Miami went after Amerson hard, targeting him on 7 straight throws on a drive that ended with Rishard Matthews catching a touchdown on Amerson.

Cornerback Dontae Johnson had 2 tackles for the 49ers in their 20-3 victory over the Vikings on Monday Night Football.

Defensive Line

Defenisve Tackle Markus Kuhn started for the Giants in their 27-26 loss to the Cowboys in Week 1.  He had 1 tackle, and it was a tackle for loss.  He left the game at one point with a knee sprain, but he did return.

Defensive End Mario Williams started in the Bills 27-14 victory over the Colts in Week 1, but didn’t record any stats.

Defensive Tackle T.Y. McGill saw action as a backup in the Colts 27-14 loss to the Bills, but failed to record any stats.

NC State LB Payton Wilson Visited with the Steelers Yesterday

Published

on

Former NC State Linebacker Payton Wilson had a Top-30 visit with the Pittsburgh Steelers yesterday. Wilson is the first Linebacker the Steelers have brought in.

Wilson has already had Top-30 visits with the Dallas Cowboys and the Carolina Panthers.

PFF ranks Wilson as the #1 Linebacker in the 2024 Draft, and #26 on their Big Board.

1. LB PAYTON WILSONNC STATE

PFF BIG BOARD RANK: 26

Wilson has the length, movement ability, IQ and tape of a first-round linebacker. What will likely keep him from being drafted on Day 1 is his injury history and age. If healthy, he can be a starting inside linebacker in any defense. (PFF)

Will someone take Wilson in the 1st round? Will he be a 2nd round pick? If he slips past that, that’s just stupid.

A post shared by DJ Horne (@djhorne)

Horne is trying to become the first Wolfpack player to be drafted since Dennis Smith Jr. was drafted by the Dallas Mavericks with the 6th pick in the 1st Round.

While Horne might not currently be projected to be drafted, he is trying to change that tune at the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament which begins tomorrow.

Horne is a special player, and genuinely possesses the skill set to compete at the next level. Whether he is drafted, or signs a 2-way contract, what he put on tape this year warrants a chance.
