Just how close was the State/UNC game last night? Closer than you think. Let’s take a closer look at the numbers. The Good -NC State matched one of the nation’s top rebounding teams 40-40 on the boards. This stat in itself should let you know that the Wolfpack competed hard against the Heels. They battled for every board and really took away their biggest advantage. -UNC makes their living in the paint. With a big time front court including NBA prospects Tyler Zeller and John Henson it’s pretty likely that they’re going to beat you in the middle. Last night however, that wasn’t the case. The NC State bigs went hard and beat UNC at their own game. In fact, State out scored the Heels 42-22 in the paint. I was really impressed by this. I thought in the first matchup State really just took it at UNC and thought they could out muscle them, but in this one they were more creative. They used pump fakes and pivots to get open in the post and used their quickness to lure the Tar Heel bigs away from the hoop. – State only turned the ball over 4 times. Yes, you…

BOX SCORE Mike Glennon was on point, throwing for 265 yards and 3 touchdowns and the NC State defense picked off Teddy Bridgewater 3 times as the Pack took down Louisville in the 2011 Belk Bowl 31-24. The Pack came out of the gate strong after halting a long Louisville drive with a Terrell Manning interception, Glennon drove the Pack down and connected with TJ Graham for the score. But Louisville struck back with a score of their own and then a added a field goal to give them the 10-7 lead early in the 2nd, but it was the...
NC State will face off against Louisville tonight at 8pm in the Belk Bowl. Very often ‘Game Preview’ articles are boring and redundant. In an effort to mix it up a little bit, I decided to breakdown a couple key statistics that I think are pivotal to the outcome of every game. 3rd Down NC State has converted on 3rd down 43% of the time, while their opponents have converted at a 39% rate. Louisville has converted on 3rd down 39% of the time, while their opponents have converted at a 38% rate. RedZone NC State has put points on the board 86%...
Leave it up to this Wolfpack team. They’ve been declared dead numerous times this season, but every time they are, they win a big game and surprise, they’re back in contention. Nothing was different on this day as the Pack fell behind 41-14 in the 3rd quarter. It seemed as if, once again, we were looking at the end of this roller coaster ride of a season… Guess again. Being down 27 points didn’t stop NC State from fighting back and taking out Maryland 56-41 behind Mike Glennon’s 5TD performance and defense that locked down in the 4th quarter. Quotes:...
PACK VS. TERPS In the 100+year gridiron series between NC State and Maryland, only one game separates the two schools in the wins and losses columns. The all-time series stands at 32-31-4 in favor of Maryland. In recent history, the series has been a little more lopsided, with the Terrapins taking eight of the last 11 contests. NC State has not won at Maryland since 2004. State won the last matchup in Raleigh, 38-31, in 2010. Last season, the score was reversed up in College Park, with Maryland taking a 38-31 victory. Tom O’Brien met with the media for the last regular season press conference Monday afternoon. O’Brien talked about the team’s huge upset win over Clemson Saturday, bowl eligibility, the Maryland Terrapins and the Thanksgiving Holidays. What do you think happened Saturday against Clemson? “We played very well. That is the best we have played. They decided that they were going to win the football game and that they were not going to lose. Certainly we have been getting to a point on defense where we have been getting better and better. Once we started getting healthy and changed things around...
QUOTES (Tom O’Brien) On play of defense, especially in second quarter: “I think they did a great job. Our defense was able to create good field position for our offense to start with, and it’s a lot easier when you get some touchdowns (offensively) out of it too.” On the play of David Amerson: “We knew he was very talented coming in. He certainly has the knack for going up and getting the ball. When that ball is thrown up there, he believes it is his ball.” On the getting pressure on Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd: “I think our defensive...

The Wolfpack fell to Boston College 14-10 in what was a grind-it-out defensive battle. The Pack continued their offensive struggle, scoring only 10 points and never really getting into a flow offensively. Glennon threw for 220 yards and James Washington ran in a touchdown, but that’s all they could muster. Boston College wasn’t very impressive either. Chase Rettig threw for one touchdown and backup QB Josh Bordner ran for another on the only two significant drives BC had all day. NC State now needs to win it’s final 2 games to be bowl eligible. NC STATE POSTGAME NOTES (NC State...
O’BRIEN FACES FORMER TEAM Tom O’Brien is very familiar with Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill, but probably feels much more at home on the home sidelines than on the visitor side of the field. O’Brien spent 10 years as the head coach Boston College before coming to NC State for the 2007 campaign and is the winningest coach in Eagle history (75 wins). The first ACC game that O’Brien ever coached at NC State was at Boston Col- lege on September 8, 2007. The Pack dropped that contest, 37-17, and also lost at BC in 2009, 52-20. State lost a...
