Deep Stats: eFG% & TS% Before BC
Thus far, NC State head coach Mark Gottfried has done wonders with the Wolfpack’s offensive efficiency.  NC State currently ranks 2nd in the  ACC in Effective Field Goal Percentage and True Shooting Percentage (52.3%/56.2%).  Last year the Wolfpack ranked 10th in the conference in both categories (47.8%/51.5%).  The difference is drastic.  With that being said, NC State hasn’t  necessarily grown leaps and bounds on the defensive end.  The Wolfpack currently ranks 8th in the ACC in eFG% defense (47.6%) and 9th in TS% defense (51.4%).  Last season they ranked 6th in eFG% defense (46.8%) and 7th in TS% defense (50.8%)....

Deep Stats: eFG% & TS% After Syracuse
NC State had it’s second best shooting performance of the season in their loss to Syracuse.  This would have been a good recipe for a win, but Syracuse shot the best that anyone has all season against the Wolfpack’s defense.  Check out the breakdown of just how well both teams shot the ball: (In short, eFG% adds more value to made 3-point baskets and TS% takes into account free throws as well. For a more thorough explanation of these statistics, click here.) NC State actually shot a higher field goal percentage than Syracuse (57.7%/56.5%), but the Orangemen’s eFG% was higher...

Deep Stats: eFG% & TS% After Elon
We’ve previously taken a look at Effective Field Goal Percentage and True Shooting Percentage in the past.  Both of these Advanced Statistics take an in depth look at the effectiveness of a shooter beyond the traditional ‘Field Goal Percentage.’  In short eFG% adds weighted value to 3-point field goals, because they are worth one more point; and TS% evaluates field goals, 3-point field goals, and free throws.  For a more detailed explanation, check out our introduction. Here is a look at both of these statistics after Elon: It shouldn’t shock anyone that Scott Wood is statistically the purest shooter on...

Deep Stats: eFG% & TS% Through 3 Games
Yesterday, I introduced you to the NBA efficiency rating.  Today we are going to take a look at two shooting percentages that we will be tracking all season long, for both the individual players and the team: Effective Field Goal Percentage & True Shooting Percentage. Effective Field Goal Percentage Effective Field Goal Percentage (eFG%) is a shooting metric that combines both 2-point and 3-point shooting.  What makes eFG% different than the standard FG%, is the fact that it that it takes into account the impact of 3-point baskets, by attributing a higher value to three-pointers made.  The formula counts a...

Just how close was the State/UNC game last night? Closer than you think. Let’s take a closer look at the numbers. The Good -NC State matched one of the nation’s top rebounding teams 40-40 on the boards. This stat in itself should let you know that the Wolfpack competed hard against the Heels. They battled for every board and really took away their biggest advantage. -UNC makes their living in the paint. With a big time front court including NBA prospects Tyler Zeller and John Henson it’s pretty likely that they’re going to beat you in the middle. Last night however, that wasn’t the case. The NC State bigs went hard and beat UNC at their own game.  In fact,  State out scored the Heels 42-22 in the paint. I was really impressed by this. I thought in the first matchup State really just took it at UNC and thought they could out muscle them, but in this one they were more creative. They used pump fakes and pivots to get open in the post and used their quickness to lure the Tar Heel bigs away from the hoop. – State only turned the ball over 4 times. Yes, you…
