James Madison lost its most recent game on Sunday afternoon against UNCW, as the Seahawks swept the three-game series.

The Series
The Wolfpack and Dukes have only met four times in the history of the programs, as each team has won two games in the series.

Last Time Versus James Madison
NC State and James Madison last met during the 2010 regular season when the Wolfpack earned a 6-2 win against the Dukes in a neutral site matchup held in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Last Time Versus James Madison at Doak Field
JMU made the trip to Raleigh in 2008 for the NCAA Regional hosted by NC State, as the Wolfpack recorded a 6-2 win in the first-round matchup of the regional.

Scouting James Madison
The James Madison Dukes have compiled a 21-23 record on the year, including a 6-12 mark in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action. JMU owns an 8-9 record in road games this season and was edged at Virginia, 3-2, in its last game against an ACC opponent.

The Dukes have logged a team batting average of .252 for the year and average 4.81 runs per game. Fox Semones leads the squad at the plate with 47 hits to go along with seven home runs and 27 RBIs.

On the mound, JMU’s pitching staff has compiled a 3.71 team earned run average (ERA) and has struck out 380 batters in 395.1 innings. Tuesday’s starter Michael Bechtold is 1-1 on the year with a 2.95 ERA, while Wednesday’s starting pitcher Garrett Richards has a 2.70 ERA with an 0-1 record.

Bailey Getting It Done from Both Sides of the Plate
Freshman Patrick Bailey accomplished a rare feat last weekend, as the switch-hitting catcher homered from both sides of the plate in game one of the series against William & Mary. He hit a solo homer from the right side in the second inning and a solo home run from the left side in the top of the eighth.

For the year, Bailey has 23 hits from the left side and 19 hits right-handed.

Deatherage on a Tear
NC State’s Brock Deatherage has been on a tear in the last 10 games, as he leads the Wolfpack with a .359 batting average. The senior outfielder has collected 10 RBIs during that span, highlighted by four home runs.

Additionally, the Burlington, N.C., native has a .718 slugging percentage in the past 10 games.

McLain’s on Base
Josh McLain has reached base safely in the last 15 games to own the longest active streak for the Wolfpack. The senior center fielder has tallied 23 multi-hit games to lead all players in the ACC and has recorded at least one hit in 42 of 46 games this season.

Pack Power
NC State’s 67 home runs this season ranks sixth in the NCAA and is three more than the Pack hit in all of last season (64). The Wolfpack’s total is the most for the program since 2010 when the team hit 98 homers.

Ten different players have hit at least one home run for NCSU this season and five players have recorded multi-home run games.

NC State has four players with 11 or more homers, the only team in the ACC to accomplish the feat.

Magic Numbers
The Wolfpack is 24-3 on the year when scoring at least six runs in a game and is 28-3 when holding its opponents to five runs or fewer.

NC State just defeated #11 UNC 9-8 via a walk-off Home Run from Junior Shortstop Brandon Butterworth in the Bottom of the 9th inning.

The Wolfpack have 6 walk-off wins in 2024, which leads the nation.

In a game in which there was a combined 8 Home Runs between both teams, it was the last one that mattered most.

UNC kicked things off in the Top of the 1st inning with a Home Run from Casey Cook. The Wolfpack would respond in the Bottom of the 1st with a 2-RBI Single from Junior Catcher Jacob Cozart.

Cook would hit another Home Run in the Top of the 3rd, and Vance Honeycutt would also hit a 2-Run Home Run, giving the Tar Heels a 4-2 lead.

Once again, the Wolfpack responded in the bottom frame. Senior Third Baseman Alec Makarewicz hit his 15th Home Run of the season.

Junior Outfielder Chase Nixon had an RBI Single, and his Freshman brother Luke (2B) brought in the third run of the inning on a fielders choice, giving the Wolfpack a 5-4 lead.

The 4th inning was the only inning of the contest in which no runs were scored.

UNC’s Park Harber tied the game in the Top of the 5th with a solo shot.

Cozart was the Wolfpack’s MVP, giving his team a 3-run cushion in the bottom of the 6th inning with a 3-run Home Run. He had 5 RBI’s this evening.

The cushion wasn’t enough, with the Tar Heels scoring 3 runs over the next two innings. Alberto Osuna hit a solo shot, Alex Madera had an RBI Single, and Harber hit a sac fly.

With the game tied in the bottom of the 9th, with one out, Brandon Butterworth crushed the ball over the left field fence, snapping a 5-game losing streak against UNC.

Wolfpack Starter Sam Highfill lasted 3.1 innings, giving up 4 runs, while striking out 4. His ERA on the year is 5.16.

It was Sophomore Shane Van Dam that brought stability to the mound, pitching 3.2 innings, giving up 2 earned runs, while striking out 5. On the year, Van Dam’s ERA is 2.90.

Sophomore Derrick Smith came in to close things out, and gave up 1 run on 1 hit in 2 innings, striking out 2. Smith picked up the Win, and is 3-0 on the year.

Game 2 of the series is tomorrow night at 6pm at Doak Field. The Wolfpack will look to secure their first series victory over their rival since 2021, and their first one at home since 2016.
