NC State took care of business this afternoon, defeating Georgia State 41-7.

The Panthers gave the Wolfpack fans caution when they drove straight down the field and scored on the opening drive with expediency, but it would be the only points they would put on the board the rest of the day.

NC State got a glimpse of the goodness of Redshirt Freshman Wide Receiver Thayer Thomas in week 1 against James Madison (16-yard touchdown), but today we got a heavy dose of the walk-on turned phenom.

For the second straight week, Thomas scored the first Wolfpack touchdown of the day, and this one was a one-handed catch across the middle.

That was shortly after he high pointed this bad boy across the middle a few plays earlier.

Thomas finished the day with obvious career highs of 9 receptions and 114 yards receiving. Oh, he also had a career high in passing yards. Yes, I said passing yards. Thomas connected with Freshman Running Back Trent Pennix on this double pass (first career catch).

Junior Wide Receiver Kelvin Harmon had a tremendous bounce back game of 8 receptions for 129 yards.

Redshirt Graduate Senior Quarterback Ryan Finley had a monster day, completing 31 of his 38 passes for 370 yards and 2 touchdowns (1 interception). His second touchdown was a 1-yarder to Freshman Running Back Trent Pennix, who finished the game with 28 yards rushing and 66 yards receiving (first touchdown).

The Wolfpack offense pounded the Panthers with 541 yards of total offense, and held the Georgia State offense to 349 yards.

Redshirt Graduate Senior Linebacker Germaine Pratt had 7 tackles, and so did Redshirt Freshman Linebacker Isaiah Moore and Freshman Nickelback Tanner Ingle. Freshman Defensive Tackle Alim McNeil had 1.5 sacks.

Ingle came up huge with this tackle on 4th down.

Freshman Place Kicker Chris Dunn was 2 for 2 on field goal attempts (25 and 28).

To be honest, the Wolfpack running attack was abysmal again. Senior Reggie Gallaspy got in the end zone, but finished with 24 yards (2.2 yards per carry). Freshman Ricky Person didn’t dress. The Wolfpack averaged 3.7 yards per carry for the game, but that’s really inflated by Redshirt Graduate Senior Running Brady Bodine’s 39-yard touchdown run (first career touchdown).

In order for NC State to have the year they want to have in 2018, they couldn’t afford to lose any games they “should” win, and playing West Virginia in Week 3 with a 2-0 record was a necessity.
