NC State vs. UVA: Series Breakdown

It’s been six years since the last time NC State and Virginia played a football game.

Historically speaking, that’s mind-blowing.

The Wolfpack and the Cavaliers were annual opponents from 1960-2003, but the two charter members of the ACC have only played each other 4 times since the ACC expanded in 2004.

For context, Dave Doeren has never faced Virginia since he became the head coach at NC State in 2013. After Saturday, he will officially be able to say he’s played every team in the ACC.

The lack of recent history between these two football programs doesn’t mean their is a lack of history between the two.

The series dates all the way back to 1904 when the Wolfpack lost on their turf 0-5. Overall, NC State holds a 34-22-1 advantage over Virginia in the series, and a 16-9 record at home.

In more recent memory, Virginia has won 6 out of the last 10, and did ruin NC State’s homecoming back in 2012. The Cavaliers entered the game with a 3-6 record (NC State was 5-4), but that didn’t stop them from ruining the homecoming spirit, running over the Wolfpack 33-6.

It’s sad that two teams with this much history can go 5 seasons without facing each other. It’s sad that over the past 5 years, players graduated from NC State, and never played UVA. It has taken Dave Doeren 6 years to play all 15 members of the ACC. To me, that’s unfortunate.

Below is a complete breakdown of the historical series between NC State and Virginia from the media guide.
