Last night Junior Wide Receiver Kelvin Harmon accomplished 2 milestones: 1) He walked out with the Seniors on “Senior Night” as a Junior, because he will likely head to the NFL next year. 2) He tied the NC State record for most receptions in a single game.
Harmon snagged 15 catches for 134 yards against the Demon Deacons.
1. Torry Holt, Wake Forest, 1998, 179 yards, 15 receptions
1. Kelvin Harmon, Wake Forest, 2018, 134 yards, 15 receptions
1. Jaylen Samuels, S. Carolina, 2017, 85 yards, 15 receptions
4. Jakobi Meyers, James Madison, 2018, 161 yards, 14 receptions
5. Jerricho Cotchery, Kansas, 2003, 171 yards, 13 receptions
Harmon deserves all the praise that is coming his way, but honestly, it’s a shame that he didn’t finish the night in sole possession of the top spot.
Why am I griping about a 15 reception night?
Because last night the Wolfpack settled for 3 field goals in the red zone, and didn’t target Harmon a single time.
We are talking targets.
Harmon is the king of the 50/50 ball.
Finley was 3 of 7 in the Red Zone last night, and not one of the 7 attempts went Harmon’s way.
Red Zone Offensive Breakdown vs. Wake Forest
Run
Jakobi Meyers – 1 carry for 1 yard
Reggie Gallaspy – 2 carries for -6 yards.
Ryan Finley – 1 carry for a 2 yard touchdown
Pass
Jakobi Meyers was targeted 4 times, collecting 2 receptions for 10 yards.
Cary Angeline was targeted once and dropped a wide open touchdown reception.
CJ Riley has 1 reception for 2 yards.
Emeka Emezie was targeted one time.
The News & Observer’s Joe Giglio broke down the red zone stats for the season, and Finley has only targeted Harmon 15.1% of the time in the Red Zone.
Doeren mentioned that Harmon needs to be open to throw to him in the press conference. Since when has Harmon needed to be open to make a reception?
Harmon had a heck of a night, but he should have had a chance for a 16th or 17th reception in the end zone.
