NC State has lost their last three games against East Carolina, and the Wolfpack are looking to end that streak, and start a winning streak today.

The NC State versus East Carolina series dates back to October 10th, 1970, and the Wolfpack hold a 16-13 overall record.

While ECU has won 8 of the last 12 dating back to 1987, only 5 of those have been in Raleigh. The Wolfpack holds a 14-8 record over the Pirates in Carter-Finley Stadium.

There isn’t a lot of love between these two schools. NC State vs. ECU was an annually scheduled game from 1970-1987, until athletic director Jim Valvano cancelled the series after an estimated 2,000 Pirate fans stormed the field, tearing down goal posts at Carter-Finley Stadium after East Carolina beat the Wolfpack 32-14.

Then in 1999, after the devastation of Hurricane Floyd down in Greenville, NC State allowed East Carolina to host #9 Miami in Carter-Finley Stadium. The Pirates pulled off the upset, beating the Hurricanes 27-23. You guessed it…the ECU fans stormed the field at Carter-Finley, and once again tore down goal posts.

It took legislation by the North Carolina government to force NC State and UNC to put East Carolina on their schedules regularly back in the late 90’s.

Back in 2007, the Student Government Associations of both schools began awarding the Victory Barrel to the winner of the game, allowing them to take it home until their next meeting, and put a placard on it noting their victory.

There have been three purple placards in a row on the barrel. Today the Wolfpack will look to add another red one.
