QB Matt McKay Transfers from NC State to Montana State

Published

on

Matt McKay began the 2019 football season as the starting Quarterback at NC State, before losing his job after starting the first 5 games. In 2020, McKay will be a quarterback at Montana State.

After announcing that he would be transferring from NC State on December 1st, McKay announced via Twitter yesterday that he was transferring to Montana State.

In 2019, McKay completed 57.3% of his passes for 910 yards and 3 touchdowns with 1 interception. He also had 4 rushing touchdowns.

McKay was originally a 4-star prospect in NC State’s 2017 recruiting class, playing his High School ball here in Raleigh at Wakefield.

Since Montana State is an FCS program, McKay will not have to sit out a year, and will be able to play immediately, with 2 years of eligibility remaining.

Montana State (10-3) finished the this year ranked 5th nationally in the FCS, losing in the 2nd round of the playoffs.

Honestly, Montana State seems like a strange choice for McKay, with starting quarterback Tucker Rovig returning next season as a Redshirt Junior. In 2019, Rovig threw for 1,705 yards and 13 touchdowns (4 interceptions) for a Passing Efficiency Rating of 136.8.
