NC State Signee Blake Walston Signs Contract with D-Backs
2019 NC State Signee Blake Walston (6’4″/172) was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks with the 26th overall pick tonight in the 1st round back on June 3rd.
There was some speculation on whether or not he would sign with the D-Backs, because he wouldn’t come cheap.
Many scouts believe that in three years, he could be one of the top picks in the draft.
We need to speculate no longer.
Walston will bypass college baseball at NC State, and begin his professional baseball career.
Walston’s signing bonus will net him $2.45 million of guaranteed money.
NC State’s Will Wilson Named Consensus All-American
RALEIGH – Junior shortstop Will Wilson of the NC State baseball team became the program’s first consensus All-American since 2012 after earning honors from DI Baseball and the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) over the weekend.
Additionally, he earned second team honors on the College Baseball Foundation’s inaugural All-America list.
The Kings Mountain, N.C., native owns 11 All-America mentions in his career, the second-most in Wolfpack history behind Carlos Rodon. Rodon was the last consensus All-American prior to Wilson and earned 12 in his career.
Wilson was recently drafted by the Los Angeles Angels as the No. 15 overall pick and is currently with the Orem Owlz, the rookie affiliate for the Angels in Orem, Utah.
NC State’s Tyler McDonough Tabbed Perfect Game Freshman All-American
RALEIGH – Tyler McDonough of the NC State baseball team collected first team freshman All-America honors from Perfect Game on Thursday.
An All-ACC Second Team and ACC All-Freshman selection, this is the second All-America nod of his career as he was also recently named to Collegiate Baseball’s list.
A Liberty Township, Ohio, native, he led the team and all freshmen in the Atlantic Coast Conference with 80 hits, including 25 multi-hit performances. He started 60 games in center field and compiled a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.
McDonough turned in three four-hit outings in ACC play, highlighted by his 4-for-5 showing vs. Wake Forest on April 20 when he was a single shy of hitting for the cycle. He also went 4-for-5 on March 10 vs. Pittsburgh and March 15 vs. then-No. 1 Florida State.
Additionally, he finished third on the team with a .320 clip and 47 runs batted in while stealing a team-best 10 bases out of 12 attempts, as those numbers rank top seven among all freshmen in the ACC.
NC State’s Patrick Bailey Projected as a 1st Round Pick in 2020 MLB Draft
It looks like NC State could have players drafted in the 1st Round of the MLB Draft in back-to-back years.
Shortstop Will Wilson was taken by the Los Angeles Angels with the 15th overall pick earlier this month, and MLB.com projects that Catcher Patrick Bailey will follow suit.
Bailey is projected to be taken 8th overall by the Cincinnati Reds.
8. Reds: Patrick Bailey, C, North Carolina StateMLB
The class of the 2020 catchers, Bailey is a switch-hitter with power from both sides of the plate as well as solid throwing, receiving and blocking skills.
If Bailey were to be taken 8th overall next year, he would become the 2nd highest drafted player in NC State history behind Pitcher Carlos Rodon, who was taken 3rd overall by the Chicago White Sox back in 2014.
The Wolfpack have only had 7 players ever drafted in the 1st round, and have never had players taken in the 1st round in back-to-back years.
Bailey hit .288 as a Sophomore this year, with 68 hits, 17 doubles, 10 homers and a .513 slugging percentage in 2019. Defensively, he committed just five errors in 476 chances for a .989 fielding percentage.
