NC State’s Jason Parker Earns ACC Pitcher of the Week Honors

Published

on

GREENSBORO, N.C. – After throwing a career-long seven shutout innings with a career-high 10 strikeouts in the win against top-ranked Florida State last Friday, NC State junior Jason Parker has been named the ACC Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced Monday.

Parker continued his strong start to the season with another stellar performance on the mound to lift the Wolfpack to a 16-0 win in the series opener against Florida State. The Seminoles entered the game ranked among the nation’s top 10 in five major polls, including No. 1 by Collegiate Baseball.

“I thought Jason was outstanding,” head coach Elliott Avent said to the media following Friday’s win. “That was the best I’ve seen him throw all year. He’s been very, very good for us on Fridays this year.”

The New Bern, N.C., native retired the side in order twice while allowing just five hits in the contest – all singles. Parker has allowed only two extra base hits this season — none in conference play — and lowered his ERA to 0.68.

He’s now 3-0 on the season with 26 strikeouts in 26.1 innings pitched and opponents have compiled a .198 batting average against him. Parker has also had great command, walking just six batters on the year and has not issued more than two walks in any start.

“I had just about all of my pitches working,” Parker said after his standout performance. “My fastball and slider command were there, and I had good feel for my changeup. Me and Patrick [Bailey] were on the same page and we had it firing.

“I love coming here every day and getting better. I look forward to pitching on Fridays because I know the guys are going to put up runs at the plate and my defense is going to be great behind me.”

Parker has yielded just two earned runs all season and has not given up a run in conference play.

With a record of 19-1, NC State is ranked No. 1 for the first time in program history, as Collegiate Baseball has the Wolfpack atop the rankings.

NC State will return to action Tuesday eveningwhen the Towson Tigers head to Raleigh. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. at Doak Field at Dail Park.

NC State Baseball Ranked #1 for the 1st Time in School History

Published

on

After going 4-1 last week, including winning 2 out of 3 over #2 FSU (last weeks ranking) over the weekend, the NC State (19-1) Baseball team is ranked #1 in the nation in any poll for the first time in school history.

The Collegiate Baseball Poll moved the Wolfpack up from the #2 team in the land, to the TOP team in America.

Here’s what they had to say about the Pack:

TUCSON, Ariz. — N.C. State (19-1) is ranked No. 1 in the latest Collegiate Baseball NCAA Div. I baseball poll presented by Big League Chew.

It marks the first time in Wolfpack history the team has been No. 1 in baseball by any poll. N.C. State started the season with 19 straight wins before losing the finale of a 3-game series against Florida St. The Wolfpack won the 3-game series, two games to one.

N.C. State (5-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference) has belted 55 doubles (No. 1 in nation) and 23 homers in 20 games and is averaging 8.8 runs per game. On defense, the Wolfpack has only committed 11 errors all season (third in nation with .985 fielding percentage).

Florida St., ranked No. 1 the previous two weeks, fell to 14th this week after losing three times last week. Among the losses were a 20-7 setback against Florida and 16-0 loss to N.C. State. (Link)

The USAToday Coaches Poll moved NC state up 7 spots to #5.

Baseball America moved the Wolfpack up 15 spots to #6.

D1Baseball moved the Pack up 14 spots to #6.

Perfect Game moved NC State up 9 spots to #8.

We are still waiting for the NCBWA to release their weekly poll (ranked 18th last week), but I’m gonna go on a hunch here and say that the Wolfpack will be Consensus Top-10 team.

#2 NC State’s Comeback Falls Short Against #1 FSU for First Loss

Published

RALEIGH, N.C. – After tallying the best start to a season in program history and tying the record for consecutive wins (19), second-ranked NC State endured its first loss of 2019 as top-ranked Florida State avoided the series sweep with a 7-5 win Sunday afternoon at Doak Field at Dail Park.

The Wolfpack was one of two unbeaten teams heading into the contest, as Arizona State is now the nation’s lone undefeated team. NC State moves to 19-1 on the year and 5-1 in ACC play, while Florida State improves to 14-4 and 3-3 in conference action.

After trailing 7-1, the Pack rallied with three runs in the bottom of the sixth and added a run in the eighth but came up short against the Seminoles, 7-5.

FSU starter Shane Drohan picked up the win on the mound with five innings pitched, while NC State’s starter Michael Bienlien was charged with the loss.

Avent’s Additions

“After the game I told the team how proud the staff and I are of them,” said head coach Elliott Avent. “Nineteen wins in a row to start the season, a program record. This is the first third of the season and now we’ve got to get ready for the next third and it doesn’t get any easier.

“I’m really proud of the way our guys played. We keep battling and that’s all this club knows how to do. This has probably been the best stretch we’ve ever had since I’ve been here, they’ve been incredible.”

Quick Hits

– Florida State struck first in the contest with three runs in the second, following an RBI single from Mike Salvatore and a two-RBI single by Reese Albert.
