#13 NC State Baseball Holds Off Notre Dame To Even Series

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – No. 13 NC State baseball held off a two-out rally in the ninth inning by Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon at Frank Eck Stadium in South Bend, Ind., to even the series with a 4-2 win.

The Wolfpack once again faced a deficit in the contest, but a four-run surge in the sixth along with holding off the late rally allowed the squad to earn a come-from-behind win for the 17th time this season.

NC State improves to 33-11 on the year and 14-9 in ACC play, while the Fighting Irish fall to 18-23 overall and 11-12 in conference action. 

Quick Hits

-Both teams managed to put at least a runner on in the first three-and-a-half innings but couldn’t find a scoring opportunity. 

-The Irish struck in the home half of the fourth in its first three at-bats. Daniel Jung led off with a double to right center and scored on Eric Gilgenbach’s one-out single to left field.

-A four-run burst in the top of the sixth allowed the Pack to take the lead. Tyler McDonough cleared the bases with a double to left center after a single and pair of walks loaded the bases up on two-outs.

-Evan Edwards drove in McDonough with a double to right center, giving the Pack a 4-1 advantage. 

-The score held for two-and-a-half innings, but in the ninth the Irish started a two-out rally. A one-out walk followed by a pair of two-out hits loaded the bases, and Spencer Myers knocked in a run with a single through the left side to cut Notre Dame’s deficit to two. 

-With the bases still loaded, Edwards fielded a ground ball and flipped to closer Nick Swiney at first to secure the final out of the game.

Inside The Box Score

-Edwards led the team at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance that featured two doubles and an RBI.

-McDonough extended his reached base safely streak to 13 with his 3-RBI double in the sixth. He additionally owns a six-game hit streak.

On The Mound

-Four Wolfpack pitchers contributed the win, led by Evan Justice (3-0) who threw 2.1 innings and did not yield a hit.

-Justice, Alec Barger and Swiney combined to allow just one Notre Dame batter to reach base from the fifth through eighth innings.

-Swiney tossed the final two innings to collect his first save of the year.

NC State and Notre Dame will play the rubber match Sunday at 1 PM at Frank Eck Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on the ACC Network Extra and there will be free audio stream on WKNC 88.1 FM.
