Jakobi Meyers Standing Out at Patriots Training Camp

Published

on

NC State fans know how special Wide Receiver Jakobi Meyers is, but 32 NFL teams didn’t, letting him go undrafted this summer.

Meyers earned 1st team All-ACC honors last year, crossed the 1,000 yard barrier, and broke NC State’s single season recored for receptions in a season (92).

The Patriots were smart enough to sign Meyers as an undrafted free agent, but his roster spot isn’t guaranteed.

New England has continually showed the ability to find game changing wide receivers in the undrafted free agent market. Meyers looks to be the next in line.

Heading into yesterday’s practice, Tom Brady had connected with Meyers more than any other receiver through 8 practices.

Meyers has even been working with the 1’s.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick likes what he sees in Meyers.

“Well, he’s a smart kid, and he understands (the offense) and has versatility,” Patriots coach Bill Belichick said Thursday morning. “Like any rookie, any young player, there’s a lot of things he needs to work on technique-wise — recognition, route adjustments — just a lot of fine points. He basically knows what to do, but there are a lot of subtleties and nuances that all receivers need to pick up — certainly in our offense — and he’s doing that.

“There’s more than we’ve had to get down, but he’s making progress there. Whether that comes from his quarterback background, or his experience, or his intelligence, or his learning, I’m not really sure. But that’s not really an issue. He’s a smart kid, and he learns well.” (NESN)

Meyers came to New England looking for a challenge.

“It’s definitely hard, but that’s why I kind of chose to sign here,” Meyers told reporters last weekend, via Patriots.com. “I wanted the challenge. I wanted to embrace it and just see. If you can make it here, I feel like you can make it anywhere. I’m just trying to soak it up every day.”

“You’ve just got to earn everything,” added Meyers. “Everything is worked for, nothing is given. And then there’s a lot of great guys out here, so if you don’t catch up fast – and I mean fast – you will get left behind.” (Forbes)
