VIDEO: Bailey Hockman Talks About What Makes Him Unique in QB Room

Published

on

I caught up with Redshirt Sophomore Quarterback Bailey Hockman at NC State’s Media Day yesterday. The video is ABOVE, and a bulleted breakdown of what he had to say is BELOW.

  • I think Coach Roeper is the best QB coach around.
  • I’m 3-Dimensional. I can make plays with my feet. I can make plays in the air. Feel like I have a talented arm. I love to work.
  • Look at this place. I came here on my 1st visit, and it just felt different. The camaraderie of the guys. How they moved and cared for each other.
  • Guys were flying in the scrimmage (Saturday). Tanner Ingle was making plays left and right.
  • Quarterback Matt McKay is probably the worst person at taking compliments.
  • I’ve got a dog named Kodak, and he looks a little bit like Tuffy.

Dave Doeren Meets with the Press After BC Loss: BULLETED

Published

on

NC State head coach Dave Doeren met with the media after the Wolfpack’s 45-24 loss to Boston College this afternoon. You can watch the video here, or read the bulleted breakdown below.

Failing to stop the run…

  • Don’t know where to start.
    • Didn’t tackle well.
    • Didn’t set edges.
    • Didn’t play low enough.
    • Didn’t have good enough technique.
  • Pushed around at times.
  • Their running backs ran through contact.
  • Bottom line: they did a better job.

Devin Leary…

  • Felt like Bailey Hockman was a little bit shook.
    • Could be wrong on that, but that’s how I felt.
  • Devin Leary went in and looked calm and we wanted to give him a shot.
    • He seemed level. Wasn’t pressing and was just playing.
  • Valuable reps for him to get out there and see what he can do.

Injuries…

  • There’s 11 guys that were in our 2-deep when the season started that aren’t playing right now.
    • Makes it hard for chemistry on either side of the ball.
    • There’s a lot of guys not playing. Not an excuse.
  • The guys out there have to take advantage of the opportunity to play better.
  • Have to do everything schematically to give them opportunities to make plays.

Red zone efficiency…

  • It’s everything.
  • Ran a timing route for Thayer Thomas early in the game.
    • He was open and Bailey Hockman threw it over his head. Would have been a touchdown.
  • We got stopped 2x down there on an inside rush off the edge.
    • Last year, Reggie Gallaspy could’ve ran threw that probably. Freshman Running Backs not there yet.
  • Went with Matt McKay to see if he could get us some QB run game going. Didn’t get us in the end zone.
  • There’s a lot of things we’ve got to look at. It’s infinite right now.

Boston College Runs All Over NC State, Waxing the Pack 45-24

Bad.

So bad.

Very, very bad.

What Dave Doeren’s Wolfpack put on the field today in Chestnut Hill was an embarrassment, losing to Boston College…

Losing to a team that is better than you gets old, but can be understood. NC State was a 3-point favorite, and lost by 21.

What can’t be understood is a complete lack of composure, fundamentals, effort and preparation. The amount of missed tackles were astronomical.

What can’t be understood is Junior Wide Receiver Emeka Emezie dropping pass after pass. For what it’s worth, Emezie wasn’t the only other player with butter fingers.

What can’t be understood is the offensive play calling. The Co-Offensive Coordinator project has been a bust.

What can’t be understood is rushing for 56 yards against a team that allows opponents to rush for an average of 191.8 yards.

What can’t be understood is allowing the Eagles to rush for 429 yards. I don’t care that they are the best rushing team in the ACC. That should NEVER happen. 429 FREAKING YARDS. A.J. Dillon rushed for 223 yards and 3 touchdowns, and David Bailey rushed for 181 yards and 2 touchdowns. NC State had only given up 400 yards through the first 6 games. The Eagles rushed for 429 yards today. I just had to say it one more time.

What can’t be understood is that Devin Leary was the 3rd string Quarterback. What can’t be understood is that it took the coaching staff this long to give him this shot. In a short sample of work, he simply passes the eye test. It seems blatantly obvious that he’s the better choice.

I didn’t want to say anything positive about this game, but I’ll give a shoutout or two.

Redshirt Freshman Wide Receiver Devin Carter had a breakout performance, with 6 receptions for 140 yards.

Redshirt Sophomore Wide Receiver Thayer Thomas had 2 touchdown receptions, and 47 yards receiving.

Freshman Quarterback Devin Leary has some areas to work on, but the intangibles are there. Leary was 15 of 33 for 259 yards and 3 touchdowns (0 interceptions). Honestly, it shouldn’t even be a conversation. Leary should start for the Wolfpack against Wake Forest in two weeks. If that’s not the plan, Wolfpack fans will revolt.

NC State has next week off before they head up to dreaded Winston-Salem to face Wake Forest, who is always a thorn in the side of the Wolfpack.

This team is young. This team is injured. But I don’t want to hear a word about it.

Those are poor excuses.

The players that were able to play are better and more capable than that.

A lot of souls need to be searched, beginning with the coaching staff.
