NC State’s Devin Leary Makes O’Brien Award Great 8 in Week 5

NC State Redshirt Sophomore Devin Leary had a breakout performance against Pitt this past week, and he has been honored for it. This week Leary was named to the Davey O’Brien Award Great 8 list in Week 5. The Davey O’Brien has been awarded to the best quarterback in college football since 1977.


Shane Buechele, SMU, Sr., 6-1, 207, Arlington, Texas

  • Passed for 474 yards, the third-highest mark in school history, and had 501 yards of total offense, while completing 32 of 45 passes as SMU downed No. 25 Memphis, 30-27.

Matt Corral, Ole Miss, So., 6-1, 205, Ventura, Calif.

  • Threw nearly as many touchdown passes (4) as incompletions (24 of 29, 320 yards), and also ran for 51 yards, in a 42-41 overtime win over Kentucky.

Max Duggan, TCU, So., 6-2, 201, Council Bluffs, Iowa

  • Led TCU to a 33-31 victory over No. 9 Texas by totaling 310 yards of offense (231 passing, 79 rushing) and scoring a pair of rushing touchdowns, including the game winner.

Mac Jones, Alabama, Jr., 6-3, 214, Jacksonville, Fla.

  • Topped the 400-yard passing mark with a career-best 435 while completing 20 of 27 passes with four touchdowns in a 52-24 win over No. 13 Texas A&M.

Devin Leary, NC State, So., 6-1, 212, Sicklerville, N.J.

  • Steered NC State to a 30-29 win at No. 24 Pittsburgh by connecting on 28 of 44 attempts for 336 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions.

Grayson McCall, Coastal Carolina, Fr., 6-3, 200, Indian Trail, N.C.

  • Was 20-of-29 passing for 322 yards and four scores, and added 17 rushes for 44 yards, in a 52-23 win over Arkansas State.

Zach Smith, Tulsa, Sr., 6-3, 227, Grandview, Texas

  • Guided Tulsa to an 18-point comeback victory (34-26) to snap No. 11 UCF’s 21-game home winning streak by completing 17 of 29 passes for 273 yards and three touchdowns.

Zach Wilson, BYU, Jr., 6-3, 210, Draper, Utah

  • Connected on 92.3 percent of his passes (24-for-26), totaled five touchdowns (three rushing, two passing) and had 368 yards of offense (325 passing, 43 rushing) in a 45-14 win over Louisiana Tech. (Link)
