The NC State secondary has been thin due to injuries early in the 2020 season, and the news didn’t get any better yesterday.

Sophomore Rakeim Ashford was injured in the Virginia Tech game, and missed the Wolfpack’s victory over a ranked Pitt team last Saturday.

Head Coach Dave Doeren said of Ashford yesterday: “He’s done. He’s out.”

SID Annabelle Myers gave more clarification, stating that Ashford was in fact out for the year, and would be undergoing surgery on his shoulder in the next couple of weeks.

In the season opener against Wake Forest, Ashford flashed in a big way, tallying 10 tackles off the bench at Free Safety after Captain Tanner Ingle was hurt on the 2nd play of the game.

Before transferring to NC State, Ashford was one of the top JUCO Defensive Back prospects last season at Jones College, snagging 4 interceptions as a Freshman.

The Wolfpack got a steal in Ashford late in the recruiting game, and he was set to make a big impact in his 1st season in Raleigh.

Since this year is a zero-year in regards to eligibility due to Covid-19, Ashford will once again be a Sophomore in 2021.
