ESPN: NC State basketball ranked #15 in Power Index

Will you look at that! Despite not breaking the top 30 in the recent Coaches or AP polls, ESPN has NC State slotted in at #15 in their BPI (basketball power index).

Here is ESPN’s definition of what the BPI measures:

The College Basketball Power Index (BPI) is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of performance going forward. BPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Strength of Record (SOR) is a measure of team accomplishment based on how difficult a team’s W-L record is to achieve. Game predictions account for opponent strength, pace of play, site, travel distance, day’s rest and altitude, and are used to simulate the season 10,000 times to produce season projections. Numbers update daily.

The BPI is metric-driven, and honestly a little more scientific than the weekly polls, so this is a great sign. NC State’s win over UNC obviously has a lot to do with this, but it’s also how they are winning. They are combining elite-level shooting with strong defensive numbers. If they can keep that up as they start to get to full strength,  this team may just be scratching the surface

Remember, the season is young, so a lot could change. At the same time, remember that this team was picked to finish 10th or lower in most preseason projections. This looks like another year that the talking heads didn’t account for the intangibles that Keatts’ teams bring to the table. Just another reason that we at PI are big believers in what KK is building here at NC State.
