According to The Athletic, NC State Defensive Coordinator is in the mix for the open Duke Head Coaching job, along with Penn State Defensive Coordinator Manny Diaz (a former Assistant Coach at NC State from 2000-05) and Ohio State Defensive Coordinator Jim Knowles.

According to the article, all three of the candidates listed above met with Duke this afternoon.

Gibson currently is the highest paid Defensive Coordinator in the ACC, and the 2nd highest paid Assistant Coach in the conference, due to a raise he received last offseason. Over the past 4 years, Gibson has turned the NC State defense as one of the best in the country on a yearly basis.

Even though Gibson received a raise last offseason, he deserves one again. With that being said, a raise as the Defensive Coordinator wouldn’t be what he would be paid as a head coach. I don’t know what will happen between Gibson and Duke, but he deserves the opportunity to be a head coach somewhere one day, but here’s to hoping that day is a long time from today.

Or…wouldn’t it be wonderful if he just simply wanted to be the Wolfpack’s Defensive Coordinator until he retires one day.
