#10 Seed NC State stomped #7 Seed Georgia 18-1 in Game 1 of the Athens Super Regional this afternoon. 78% of the teams that win Game 1 of the Super Regionals historically go on to advance to the College World Series.

Senior Pitcher Sam Highfill had ice in his veins, producing arguably his 2nd best start of the year (8 innings, 0 earned runs and 10 K’s against Notre Dame was his best), but easily his most important to-date. Highfill threw a Quality Start of 6 innings pitched, giving up only 1 earned run, striking out 2 (3 walks). The fact that Highfill could eat up 6 innings (111 pitches) to preserve the Wolfpack bullpen for tomorrow was key. Highfill is now 7-2 on the season.

As good as Highfill was, Sophomore Andrew Shaffner’s 3 perfect innings in relief were so important heading into Game 2 tomorrow. Prior to today, Shaffner had an ERA of 7.56 in 8.1 innings pitched. What a great time to produce your best performance of your collegiate career.

The Wolfpack was able to win Game 1 without using Jacob Dudan, Cooper Consiglio or Derrick Smith out of the bullpen.

The Top of the 2nd was something to behold.

NC State scored 11 runs in the frame, marking the first time the Wolfpack have scored 10+ runs in an inning since April 2023 against Davidson.

Junior Jacob Cozart then hit his 17th Home Run of the year in the Top of the 3rd to give the Wolfpack a 12-0 lead.

In the Top of the 5th, it was Cozart again, this time knocking in Sophomore Center Fielder Eli Serrano III with a Single.

In the Top of the 7th, Senior 1st Baseman Garrett Pennington his his 17th Home Run of the year, and then in the Top of the 9th, Cozart and Senior 3rd Baseman Alec Makerewicz would both go yard. For Cozart, it was his 2nd of the day, and his 18th of the year, and for A-Mak it was his 21st on the season.

All but two of NC State’s batters had multi-hit performances. Makarewicz was 4 for 6, with a HR & a 2B, to go along with 3 Runs. Cozart was 3 for 6, with 2 Home Runs, 3 RBI’s and 3 Runs. Freshman Luke Nixon was 3 for 4 with a 2B, to go along with 3 RBI’s and 3 Runs.

What a heck of a day for NC State Baseball!

Game 2 of Super Regional between the Wolfpack and the Bulldogs is tomorrow at Noon on ESPNU. A win tomorrow would send NC State to the College World Series for the 4th time in school history, and the 2nd time in 4 seasons.
