Dave Doeren Talks Scrimmage, Duke Scott, Davin Vann, CJ Bailey, LG Competition & Ruffin McNeill

Published

on

NC State Head Coach Dave Doeren met with the media yesterday after practice. Yesterday marked 2 weeks since Fall Camp began. A transcript of what he had to say is below.

Are practices becoming a grind yet?

I don’t think so. These guys have been really intentional about getting better. It’s not like a repeat of the same words every day. You’re moving into situational football, two-minute drills, end-of-game situations, and special things with special teams. There’s not a lot of monotony in the learning. The routine can be, but you’re changing up the learning. You’re changing up the guys that are speaking to them. Our staff all gets a chance to speak. Coach (Ruffin) McNeill talked last night for the team. They get different messaging every day, and I think that helps. You’re not just trying to get them ready for the game physically. There’s a lot of mental capacity that you have to push and try to get them to be able to focus with that stress that’s going on from the learning side.

What did you learn from the scrimmage?

It was good to see the finish of plays. That’s the biggest thing. Where are we at tackling? Where are we at breaking tackles? Where are we at with contact catches? We had a full ref crew there, so, where do you need to clean things up with penalties? There’s a lot of things in that first scrimmage. Hopefully, tomorrow, we will be in the stadium under the lights that you can see improvement in the areas that we didn’t do well the week prior. The guys’ biggest goal coming out of that scrimmage is, seven days later when we play again, we get better and show those signs of improvement.

True Freshman Running Back Duke Scott

He’s really consistent. He’s ahead of the curve mentally. He’s a really strong runner, hard to tackle, and he catches the ball better than we saw in high school. He’s a really good receiver out of the backfield so far, too. He’s a quick learner, and he’s very consistent. For a young guy to come in and be the same guy in practice everyday is hard. It’s just a different pace of everything. He’s done a really nice job integrating into the needs and the wants of what the coaches have for those guys in that position room.

Areas Davin Vann Can Grow?

There’s a lot of things. I think you start with where can you get better when you’re having that discussion with a guy that’s deciding to come back or go pro. There were things that he wanted to work on in his mental game. There were things in his stamina game he wanted to work on. He wanted to have more production to move himself up in the sack game. Some of that is technique. Some of that is what he does wellness-wise away from here. He’s got a really good routine, similar to what Bradley Chubb was like. These guys that are really good D-linemen, sometimes their temper can control them, and you want to control it. Learning how to have that mentality to be the best “me” every play, that it doesn’t matter what else is going on, and to have that stand on mentally and physically, Davin has worked really hard on that, and we’ve seen great strides from him as a leader because of that.

True Freshman QB CJ Bailey

He’s doing a good job. He has learning moments like you’d expect out there, but he’s got a lot of charisma. He’s very positive. He enjoys playing football and enjoys studying football. He’s a good teammate, and he’s got arm talent. Now, it’s just getting him the reps and situations and soaking as much as we can. He’s done a good job. The progress from day one to now, you really can’t quantify it. He’s gotten a lot better.

Special Teams

Collin (Smith) has always been a placekicker, but he’s our starting kickoff guy. He’s the backup to Kanoah (Vinesett) as far as our placekicker goes. There’s been a good competition between Aiden Arias and Jacob Mann for the long snapper, and that’s continuing as we go. We feel like we have two really good snappers right now. Tomorrow will be an important day for those guys in the stadium, but we like where we’re at in the specialist room.

(Caden] Noonkester has done a really good job punting the football. There’s high standards in that room. As you guys know, we’ve had a lot of talented specialists, and so they know coming in there, it’s their job to continue that and not let that standard drop. They’ve done a nice job.

Left Guard Competition

Obviously, we’re excited about Matt McCabe; he’s done a good job. Anthony Carter, he’s got a lot of game reps. Those two guys will both be able to play for us in there. It’s been a good competition. It’s back and forth. You don’t see a lot of drop off either way. They both do good things. Both have things they need to get better at. I like where both of them are at. They worked hard in the offseason to get better.

Healthy Thus Far

It’s good, knock on wood. It’s little things, and I’d like to keep it that way. There have been some bumps and bruises, but nothing major.

Value of Having Ruffin McNeill

I told the team this last night that we’re so fortunate to have him here. He’s a national treasure, in my opinion, in many ways: coaching knowledge, the way he just treats people, his humanity, his love for people in general, not just players and coaches. He’s a great human being, and his loyal. He wants to help people, and it’s personal to him. I love being around him. It’s so awesome to me just into his office every day, sit on the couch, and talk. We’re talking about life, talking about our dads because our dads both passed away during the last few years, talking about the players, talking about the coaches, talking about the opponent, talking about our families. It’s awesome to have that. It’s like being at Grandpa’s house. I love Ruffin McNeill, and I’m so thankful that I work with him everyday.

WATCH: NC State DE Noah Potter: “There’s a Sense of Urgency” (with transcript)

Published

on

NC State Defensive End Noah Potter met with the media earlier this week after practice. You can watch the video ABOVE, or read the transcript BELOW.

You got to play 45 snaps. When was the last time you guys played that much? You’ve had quite a journey.

Yeah, I played that much at Cincinnati, but obviously dealing with injuries last year, it was good to finally be able to get a lot more plays, which is what I’ve been working for.

How did you feel you did?

I thought I made some plays that came my way.

There were some plays that I probably could have finished more. But overall, I think I did good, but we lost, so there’s obviously more stuff to work on.

Did you get some good leadership on this team that will help you guys get through what happened on Saturday?

We had a team meeting, and we kind of just aired some stuff out, things that we need to work on.

It was a good talk, it wasn’t berating one another, but just uplifting guys, but still holding people accountable. We didn’t come out the way we needed to on Saturday. Obviously, all of our goals are still in play, so it’s not the end of the world or anything, but there’s a sense of urgency there that we know we need to play better if we want to reach those goals.

It happened early in the year, so if it’s going to happen early in the year, it’s probably better than later in the year, I imagine. I mean, yeah, you don’t want to lose any game, but obviously all of our goals, if we win the ACC, that’s our goal, obviously. We kind of had a similar situation last year in the Notre Dame game, and we still let it affect us by losing to Louisville and Duke.

Coach Doeren’s message was, ‘We’re not doing that again’, and I agree with him. We’re not going to let one game affect us, it’s just a one-off, and we do not lose the attack.

Coach talked about last week, for a football play to work, it has to be 11 guys doing their job. How do you have that sense of urgency, but yet still abide by the game plan and not try to do too much?

Yeah, I think in our defense, and probably offense too, it’s just like if you don’t do your job in every play, the play’s not going to work. Coach Doeren was talking about if 10 guys do the right thing, but one guy doesn’t, it could end up in a touchdown on the defensive side, or a pick-six, or a tackle for loss. So I think that’s the sense of urgency, like I don’t want to let my teammate down and the team down by not doing what I’m supposed to do.

But on the flip side, you’ve got to have that confidence that if you’re in the right spot, you’re going to make the play for your team. So I think obviously there’s a sense of urgency, but if you play within the scheme, they say if you do your job, you’re going to make the plays that count for you. So I think that’s the mindset you’ve got to have.

WATCH: S Bishop Fitzgerald Says Tomorrow’s Game is the Biggest of the Season for NC State (with transcript)

Published

on

NC State starting Safety Bishop Fitzgerald met with the media earlier this week after practice. You can watch the video ABOVE, or read the transcript BELOW.

1 bad performance doesn’t make you a bad football team

Yeah, if you look back at the game, it’s 10-3 with three minutes left to go at halftime, we’re in the red zone and then unfortunately get a pick six and then mess up a kickoff and that’s a 14 change of points and that was 20 to three going into halftime. So if that doesn’t happen, it’s a 10-10 game at half and things aren’t looking too bad for us. So we know we can compete with anyone, we just have to learn how to capitalize on our opportunities.

How do you deal with negativities surrounding the team?

Definitely, we kind of have to take this loss to the chin for the next five days until we play again. And that’s kind of been the thing for us, just go out there and show people, and most importantly, show us that we can do it and we are the team we think we are.

How important was it for you guys to get back on the field of practice and did that help a little bit?

Yeah, we got up there, coaches getting after us, trying to pick up the intensity, we’re running around a lot.

Trying to hit our max velocity, that’s kind of what they’ve been harping is, practicing as hard as we can and not being soft at practice.

So with that said, what kind of team should we expect out there? What kind of game y’all gonna play on Saturday against Louisiana Tech?

We think, obviously, it’s the biggest game of the season. The game on Saturday is the biggest game of the season for us.

It’s taking it one day at a time, and we just kind of have to go out there and show people that we are who we say we are. And all this hype around us, you guys should be able to believe in us confidently, and we should go out there and play our best game of the season.

All your goals are still out there, aren’t they?

Yeah, we lost, I guess, an SEC opponent. Our goal is the ACC championship, so that necessarily doesn’t affect our ACC record. And we know that ACC play starts two weeks from now, and just taking it one game at a time, and winning this game, and being able to move forward with momentum.

Does it matter how you look at this? I mean, does it matter how you win this game as much as winning the game?

I mean, a win is a win. Winning is hard at any level, and that’s the thing. But we know that if we play our brand of football, that nobody can beat us. And that’s what we’re trying to play, is get back to our brand of football. Defense flying around, offense scoring points, and getting the run game going. So that’s kind of what we’ve been harping on.
