NC State Missed a Chance to Change the Narrative Against Tennessee

Published

on

NC State’s players and coaches have been emphatic after losing 10-51 to Tennessee that their goals are still intact for this season.

By that, they mean that their goal of winning an ACC Championship is still attainable, because getting whooped by the Volunteers doesn’t impact their conference record in the least.

That is true. That goal is still intact.

But a goal that is no longer intact is proving that NC State is relevant outside the ACC.

Under Dave Doeren, NC State is 4-11 against Non-Conference Power 4 opponents, and they are 1-8 since 2018. Currently, the Wolfpack is on a 4-game losing streak against Non-Conference Power 4 teams.

I consistently advocate for Dave Doeren, and still do after the Tennessee loss.

NC State is 1 of 4 schools that have won 8+ games in each of the last 4 seasons, and their company is Georgia, Alabama and Notre Dame.

Here’s another one: NC State has never had 4 consecutive seasons of 8+ wins. The school started playing football in 1892.

The Wolfpack have posted winning conference records in 5 of the last 7 years (Doeren didn’t lead NC State to a winning conference record in his first 4 seasons).

NC State has the 2nd best ACC record since 2020.

NC State has the 3rd best overall record (not conference record) in the ACC since 2014.

Doeren has helped restore dignity to the NC State football program.

With that being said, if you ever want your football program to go to the next level, get the national recognition you desire, bring in the recruits and transfers you need, you have to be able to win “big” games against Non-Conference opponents.

NC State was a 13.5-point underdog against Tennessee on Saturday night. The Wolfpack wasn’t expected to win. But after Grayson McCall’s pick-six at the end of the first half, they didn’t even look like they belonged on the same field as the Volunteers.

I’m not saying there isn’t still a ton to play for this season, because there is. I’m not saying NC State fans shouldn’t be grateful for how well Doeren has done since arriving in 2013. They should be.

I’m just saying Saturday’s game was another swing and a miss, and at some point, you’ve got to hit the ball against the big boys.
