Previewing NC State’s Opponent: Louisiana Tech

NC State will host Louisiana Tech today at Noon. Before the Wolfpack takes the field, here’s a preview of the Bulldogs.

Louisiana Tech is 1-0, defeating Nicholls State 25-17 in Week 1. The Bulldogs had a a rare early bye in Week 2.

Against Nicholls State, starting Bulldog Quarterback Redshirt Junior Jack Turner left the game after three drives with a knee injury. Louisiana Tech Head Coach Sonny Cumbie said earlier this week that he expects him to be able to play today. Turner was 4 for 8 for 70 yards with a touchdown and an interception before leaving the game due to injury.

After Turner left the game, Redshirt Freshman Blake Baker entered the game, and completed 12 of his 24 passes for 207 yards and a touchdown, with 2 interceptions.

Louisiana Tech held Nicholls to 200 yards of total offense, allowing 138 yards through the air and 62 on the ground.

Redshirt Junior Linebacker Kolbe Fields was the star of the Bulldog defense in Week 1, tallying 12 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. Fields sat out last season after transferring from LSU, after transferring from South Carolina the year before.

Starting Senior Running Back Donerio Davenport carried the ball 10 times for 27 yards. Davenport transferred in from Texas St. this offseason. Junior Marquis Crosby led the Bulldogs in rushing against Nicholls, carrying the ball 9 times for 44 yards. Two years ago, Crosby rushed for 918 yards and 9 touchdowns, averaging 5.0 yards per carry. He missed practically all of last season due to injury.

Sophomore Marlion Jackson led Louisiana Tech in receiving against Nicholls, with 3 receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown. Redshirt Junior Jay Wilkerson had 3 receptions for 64 yards. Wilkerson transferred in from Navarro Community College this offseason, after transferring from Washington State the year before.

8 Bulldog receivers logged a reception in Week 1, with 5 of them going for 20+ yards.

Louisiana Tech was turnover prone against Nicholls, turning the ball over 5 times.

Sophomore Defensive Back Michael Richard is the reigning Conference USA Freshman of the Year. He also earned Freshman All-American honors from The Athletic.

Conference USA doesn’t do Preseason All-Conference teams, but they do produce a Watch List. Quarterback Jack Turner, Offensive Lineman Bert Hale, Defensive Lineman Jessie Evans, Linebacker Kolbe Fields and Kick Returner Demarcus Griffin-Taylor made the list. Evans had 32 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks as a Junior last year.
