After serving as the Nickels Coach for NC State the past 5 years, and serving as the Interim Defensive Coordinator for the Military Bowl, Freddie Aughtry-Lindsay has picked up two more titles. He will continue to coach the Nickels, but in 2025, he will also be the Nickels Coach, and also carry the title C0-Defensive Coordinator.

NC State needed someone to coach the Safeties after Joe DeForest announced his retirement today.

Aughtry-Lindsay will be a Co-Defensive Coordinator alongside DJ Eliot, who is replacing Tony Gibson as the Wolfpack’s Defensive Coordinator. It’s my expectation that Eliot will call the plays.

“Freddie  has done a great job for us and has earned the respect of our players and coaches. I’m excited to watch him in this new role,” said Doeren. (GoPack)

Aughtry-Lindsay played Linebacker at NC State from 2001-04, where he was a 2-year starter. In his career with the Wolfpack, he had 266 tackles, 22.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks.

After playing two years of Arena Football after graduating from NC State, Aughtry-Lindsay got his first coaching position in the high school ranks, serving as the Defensive Coordinator and Linebackers Coach at Andrews High School (Andrews, NC).

He came back home to his alma mater in 2008, working as a Recruiting Assistant in 2008, and then he took on the role as a Defensive Graduate Assistant the following two seasons.

In 2011, he spread his wings, taking on his first college coaching position at Slippery Rock, coaching the Linebackers. In 2012-13, he served in the same position at Elon.

In 2014, Aughtry-Lindsay got his first opportunity as a Defensive Coordinator at St. Augustine’s, where he also coached the Special Teams.

From 2015-17, he was the Defensive Run Game Coordinator and Linebackers Coach at Campbell. While working with the Camels, Campbell ranked 5th nationally in Total Defense in the FCS ranks.

In 2018, Aughtry-Lindsay jumped back to the Power 4 ranks, working as a Senior Player Personnel Assistant at Ole Miss.

In 2019, he jumped back down to the FCS ranks to take on a Defensive Coordinator position at North Carolina Central. The Eagles ranked 17th in the FCS in Total Defense.

In 2020, Aughtry-Lindsay came back to NC State, and he has been in Raleigh ever since, coaching the Nickels.

When Tony Gibson took the Head Coaching job at Marshall, Aughtry-Lindsay was the Wolfpack’s Interim Defensive Coordinator for the Military Bowl against ECU.

In sum, he has been working professionally in the College Football ranks for 17 years, and has served in a coaching role for 13 of those years.
