WATCH: NC State’s new first baseman stuns everyone with top round at MLB’s Home Run Derby X ( vs. former MLB All-Stars)

NC State’s new first baseman, Chris McHugh, is a transfer from VCU and he’s already turning heads with his power potential.

This past summer he was invited to the MLB’s Home Run Derby Tour (called Homerun Derby X), where he was paired with MLB legend Manny Ramirez and Amanda Lorenz (softball superstar) to take on teams with guys like Braves’ legend Andruw Jones, Yankees star Nick Swisher and Red Sox/Rays power hitter Jonny Gomes.

The MLB guys are the draw. They’re the ones that are going to be hitting the most homers on most nights. But in this event, this past summer, it was Chris McHugh who stole the show (skip to 3:39 in the video below to see McHugh’s big round).

McHugh put up a round of 30, which was the best on the night, to secure the win for his team.

McHugh will only be a sophomore, and he may have only hit 6 homes as a freshman, but his advanced metrics are off the charts. He has an above average exit velocity, he’s long through the zone so he’s got power to all fields, and it looks like there’s even more power to unlock. All that being said, NC State is excited about the power potential of McHugh.

If you want to learn more about Chris McHugh and the other first basemen, we recently did a FIRST BASE PREVIEW that you should check out. And yes, a lot of what is in this article is in that preview, but that preview didn’t generate much traffic, so we’re going to assume most of you didn’t know any of this.
