#12 NC State’s errors were costly this afternoon, leading to an 8-3 loss to Ohio State in the first game of the Jax College Baseball Classic.

Junior Dominic Fritton gave up one earned run in 4.2 innings, striking out four. Unfortunately, the Buckeyes also scored four unearned runs while Fritton was on the mound. In the top of the third, sophomore third baseman Ryan Jaros made a throwing error with the bases loaded and no outs, allowing two Ohio State runners to cross the plate. In the top of the fifth, with two outs, the Buckeyes reached first due to a fielding error by Fritton. The next batter hit the ball over the fence, tacking on two more unearned runs. Fritton picked up the loss and wasn’t perfect, walking six batters (109 total pitches).

Senior shortstop Justin DeCriscio had all three of the Wolfpack’s RBIs this afternoon, sending a ball over the left-field fence in the bottom of the third, which tied the game at the time. The home run was DeCriscio’s first of the season. DeCriscio has been the Wolfpack’s best batter through five games, hitting .462.

In his first two appearances, junior Andrew Shaffner hadn’t given up an earned run in 4.2 innings. Today, he was the first man out of the bullpen and gave up two earned runs in 1.1 innings.

Junior Landon Carr made his Wolfpack debut, pitching a scoreless seventh inning. Carr spent his first two seasons at Gaston College. D1Baseball ranked him as the #30 Junior College Transfer heading into the 2025 season. Carr had a 1.88 ERA in 48 innings last year for Gaston, with a .98 WHIP, striking out 56.

Sophomore Jaxon Lucas had a rough freshman season in 2024, producing an ERA of 9.43 in 15 appearances. He got off to a decent start to the 2025 season today, giving up one earned run over the last two innings. The lone hit he surrendered was a solo home run. Lucas struck out three, and didn’t walk or hit a batter.

NC State had the same number of strikeouts as they had hits (6).

Errors are killing the Pack to start the year. Through five games, the Wolfpack have committed 10 errors, allowing 10 unearned runs to cross the plate.

NC State will play Alabama in their 2nd game of the Jax College Baseball Classic tomorrow at 4pm.
