NC State has earned a #2 seed in the 2025 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament and will face #15 seed Vermont this Saturday in the first round.

This marks the fourth time (1989, 1990, 1991, 2025) that the Wolfpack have secured a #2 seed in the tournament. Historically, they have a record of 3-3 with the #2 seed. Each of the three previous times they were seeded second, the Wolfpack won their first game but fell in the subsequent round.

NC State has never faced a #15 seed in the NCAA Tournament. In earlier years when they were a #2 seed, the tournament field consisted of only 48 teams, granting the #2 seed a bye in the first round. The Wolfpack would then play the winner of the #7 and #10 seed game. In all three prior instances as a #2 seed, the Wolfpack advanced to the Sweet 16 after winning one game.

In 1989, the Wolfpack defeated #7 seed Rutgers 75-73 in the second round, before losing 63-68 to #3 seed Ole Miss in the Sweet 16.

In 1990, NC State won against #10 seed Michigan 84-81, but lost 63-72 to #3 seed Michigan in the Regional Semifinals.

In 1991, the Wolfpack’s tournament run included a 94-83 victory over #10 seed George Washington, followed by a 71-82 loss to #3 seed UCONN in the Sweet 16.

In summary, this is the fourth occasion NC State has been the #2 seed, and they have advanced to the Sweet 16 each of the previous three times.

NC State boasts a 19-2 all-time record hosting NCAA Tournament games in Raleigh.
