NC State has been playing good baseball the past couple of weeks, but today wasn’t reflective of that. USC Upstate came to town, silenced the Pack’s bats, and lit up their pitchers.

The Wolfpack only managed 4 hits this evening, and fortunately, one of them happened to be a grand slam by junior shortstop Matt Heavner.

The other three hits were singles, with junior left fielder Josh Hogue accounting for two of them.

Sophomore Cooper Consiglio got the start, and it didn’t last very long, giving up 5 runs (2 earned) in 1.2 innings, while allowing 4 hits and 3 walks. After a promising freshman campaign, Consiglio has struggled thus far in 2025. He entered today’s game with a 5.28 ERA, having given up 7 earned runs in the past 5.1 innings.

Sophomore Jaxon Lucas has been outstanding this season, entering the contest with a 1.74 ERA in 5 appearances, but his 6th outing today did significant damage to his ERA, as he gave up 4 earned runs in 0.2 innings.

Senior Carson Kelly was the Wolfpack’s best pitcher today, posting his best performance of the season, giving up 1 earned run in 3.2 innings and striking out 6—a career high.

Sophomore Camden Wimbish was tagged for 4 earned runs in 0.1 innings.

NC State trailed 9-0 before scoring 5 runs in the 3rd and 4th innings. The Wolfpack was unable to add another run to the scoreboard, while USC Upstate scored a combined 6 runs in the 6th and 7th, forcing the game to end early due to trailing by 10 runs at the end of the 7th.

The Wolfpack has yet to lose a weekend series this season but will face a challenge this weekend, heading to Durham to play the Blue Devils (17-9/5-4).
