NC State (17-9/4-3) lost their third straight game, falling to Duke (18-9/6-4) 1-5 on the road in the opening game of a three-game series. It was a dominant performance by the Blue Devils, who shut out the Wolfpack until the top of the 9th, when redshirt sophomore catcher Drew Lanphere drove home sophomore designated hitter Trenton Lyons with an RBI single.

On the night, Duke held NC State to four hits, all singles.

Junior Dominic Fritton (4-2) looked human for the first time this season, giving up four earned runs (the most all year) in 5.2 innings, striking out seven.

It was encouraging to see senior Matt Willadsen throw 51 pitches, the most he’s thrown this year after missing the entire last season due to injury. He gave up one earned run in 2.1 innings.

Freshman center fielder Ty Head was the only batter in the starting lineup to get a hit, going 2 for 4.

The Wolfpack have won all five weekend series to start the year. If they want to make it six, they will need to win the next two games in Durham, which starts tomorrow at 3 PM on ACC Network Extra.
