After falling 16-6 to Duke (19-10/7-5) yesterday in Durham in a run-rule loss, NC State (18-10/5-4) lost their first weekend series of the 2025 season.

The Wolfpack’s starters struggled mightily this weekend. The Blue Devils scored 9 runs in the 4.1 innings NC State Sophomore Ryan Marohn was on the mound, with 6 being earned. Duke tagged Marohn with 8 hits and drew 3 walks. The sophomore Wolfpack Sunday starter now has a 3-2 record and a 4.23 ERA. NC State has lost the last three games Marohn has pitched. In his last 3 starts, he has given up 13 earned runs in 12.1 innings.

The game was scoreless until junior outfielder Josh Hogue put the Pack ahead by 1 in the top of the 4th with his 5th home run of the season, which is tied for the team lead.

The Blue Devils responded by scoring 9 runs over the next two innings.

NC State put another run on the board in the top of the 6th when sophomore Chris McHugh’s double knocked in sophomore second baseman Luke Nixon.

In the top of the 7th, the Wolfpack hit two solo home runs, cutting the Blue Devils’ lead to 5. Sophomore third baseman Ryan Jaros hit one, and junior outfielder Brayden Fraasman hit the other. Jaros has hit home runs in back-to-back games. At this moment in the season, he is currently the Wolfpack’s best batter, surpassing McHugh. Jaros is batting .359, with a slugging percentage of .615, an on-base percentage of .528, and an OPS of 1.143, leading the Pack in all four categories.

Unfortunately, Duke responded by scoring 9 runs combined in the 7th and 8th innings. Senior Wolfpack shortstop Justin DeCriscio hit a 2-run home run in the top of the 8th, but it wasn’t enough to stop Duke from ending the game early with a 10-run lead in the bottom of the 8th.

NC State will be back in action tomorrow night at 6pm, with UNC-Greensboro coming to town.
