The two hottest teams in the ACC faced off this evening, and the home team walked off the diamond with a victory. Miami (28-18/13-9) defeated #13 NC State (30-14/15-7) 6-4 in the Sunshine State in the first game of their weekend series. The Hurricanes have now won 9 straight ACC games, snapping the Wolfpack’s 7-game ACC winning streak.

NC State’s Friday starter, Junior Dominic Fritton, gave his team 6.1 innings of work, but it wasn’t his best outing—he allowed 6 earned runs, the most he’s given up all season. Fritton did strike out 8 batters (1 walk), marking his highest strikeout total since March 21st.

Freshman third baseman Daniel Cuvet hit back-to-back 2-run home runs off Fritton in the 1st and 3rd innings. Miami’s next two runs were produced by a steal of home and a sac fly.

Sophomore second baseman Luke Nixon was NC State’s top offensive player this evening, going 3 for 4 at the plate with 2 doubles, an RBI, and a run. Sophomores Alex Sosa (catcher) and Chris McHugh (first baseman) both went 2 for 4, with Sosa also hitting a double.

Junior outfielder Josh Hogue and redshirt sophomore catcher Drew Lanphere each added an RBI.

Sophomore reliever Jacob Dudan extended his scoreless inning streak, pitching 1.1 shutout innings with 1 strikeout. Dudan hasn’t allowed an earned run in 16 innings, striking out 22 during that span.

Game 2 between the Wolfpack and the Hurricanes is set for 6 p.m. tomorrow in Miami.
