WATCH: Sean Brown Says that Wasn’t NC State Defense (with transcript)

Redshirt Senior Linebacker Sean Brown met with the media after NC State defeated UVA 35-31 today. He finished with 9 tackles, which was tied for the team high, and also added a tackle for loss and QB Hurry.

Brown as adamant that what the Wolfpack defense put on tape today is not the standard at NC State.

Cian (Slone) just said you and Caden (Fordham) were the biggest leaders at halftime, trying to correct struggles on 3rd down. Virginia started 10 of 13. What was that conversation like, and how did you like the response kind of from the rest of the defense holding them to three of six in the second half?

We just knew that we weren’t playing to our standard as a defense. Offense was doing their thing, going out there, scoring points, doing what they’re supposed to do, and defensively, we were letting them down.

We were just letting the defense know, ‘The way we’re playing right now…we got to cut that shit out,’…my bad…’but we got to cut that out, and play our brand of football.’

You guys seemed to make a lot of adjustments. I know the little screen out there to the running back when the lineman pulled. You busted that play up on the last drive. That was a play that gashed you a few times. What was the key to making those adjustments, and how big do you think that was in the victory?

It wasn’t really no big thing to it. It was really just doing your job, and that’s what the adjustment was going into the second half.

We knew that we had to tackle better and just communicate better as a defense, and we knew that if we did that, nobody can mess with us.

I know you haven’t watched the film, so this is purely a gut reaction, but where do you think this defense is right now, and where do you think it can be as the season progresses?

As the season progresses, we’re going to be one of…We know we can be one of the best defenses in the nation, and what we just put out there…that’s not who we are, and we know that when we come back…we got what we put out there, we’ve got to eat that on Sunday, you know what I mean? That’s our brand of work, and we know that’s not how we play football as NC State Wolfpack, and we know when we come in on Monday, we’ve got to be ready to work.
