WW: Welcome to our next episode of Around Raleigh. We’re here in North Raleigh at the famed Millbrook High School, home of Colt Langdon. We wanted to come on site.
He’s the all-time leading scorer here at Millbrook, dropped 42 in a high school game. I know all the Pack fans are very familiar with him, followed him throughout his high school career, and we’re certainly excited to have him back in Raleigh and for him to run with the Pack.
I want to start with your parents. So your dad went to Virginia, but your dad is a huge NC State fan, to put it mildly. Very, very passionate about the Pack. I know he was very passionate about Raleigh in general. He was wearing a 919 shirt on the visit because he was so excited about Raleigh.
Talk about your parents, Mark and Michelle, and how they’ve helped you get to this point in your athletics journey.
CL: My dad grew up in Raleigh, born and raised.
He went to Millbrook, too. He was originally committed to NC State for football, but ended up going to Virginia. He helped me so much when I found out I liked basketball.
He learned basketball, and he’s kind of been my coach my whole life. So him being a part of that journey is huge. He’s the biggest part of me.
Then my mom, she wasn’t too big on sports. She was more of the academic type, but she saw how much I loved it and supported me every single game. Never missed a game. She has supported me any way she can throughout my whole life. So without them, I’d be nowhere close to where I am right now.
WW: Followed in your father’s footsteps, came here to Millbrook High School…you’re the all-time leading scorer. I’m sure you’re going to point out you did it in about a shorter amount of time than most, but you’re the all-time leading scorer here at Millbrook.
You had 42 points in a game. We won’t talk about the games with Panther Creek, against (Jordan) Snell. I know Snell wants to bring those up.
We’re going to focus on some of the other things today, but talk about your time here. You played for a great coach, Coach Davis, and you guys are still obviously very, very, very close today.
Talk about your time here at Millbrook and your high school career.
CL: I was lucky enough to be districted to go here. I live about five minutes away, so it kind of just fell in our hands that I ended up here. It’s the biggest blessing I’ve ever had.
Coach Davis, that’s my guy. I love him on and off the court. He’s helped me so much as a player, as a student, as a person. He’s helped me so much.
It’s the biggest blessing I’ve ever had to be able to go here.
WW: Let’s talk about that 42-point game. I know you want to talk about that. I’ve heard you talk about it all the time in practice. Let’s talk about it on camera here. Talk about our mindset going into the game. What happened as you started to get rolling in the game, and how everything snowballed to that 42.
It kind of just happened. You know, I got high early. I think I had about 25 in the first half. Just kept it rolling from there. I felt like every shot was good.
WW: You left early to go to Butler. I think that says everything. I’ve told you this about Coach Davis, that he supported that…that’s, like, very rare. Everybody tells you, ‘Oh, we’re with you, we’re with you.” It’s very rare where people sacrifice some winning to make sure they do what’s best for somebody. I think that says a lot about the program here and coach.
Talk about your decision to go to Butler early, kind of get your feet wet, redshirt a little bit. Butler’s in the Big East, famed basketball tradition, Hinkle Fieldhouse…I’ve played there. I played in the renovated Hinkle Fieldhouse.
Talk about leaving North Carolina, going to Indianapolis, your baptism to college basketball at Butler.
Became a great basketball player, playing against the Big East players every day.
CL: I got a lot better compared to playing against Wake County Public Schools. Then off the court, I just kind of learned how to be by myself a lot. It was definitely great for my development. Coach Davis supported it 100%.
I don’t regret it at all. Without going there, I never ended up here back in Raleigh, so I’m super glad I did it.
WW: Being one of the most prolific players to come out of Wake County in a long time, we certainly were excited to get you out of the transfer portal.
Talk about your decision to come to NC State. I knew we had your dad when we walked into Players Retreat, we had your dad. Talk about the recruitment process and your decision to come to NC State.
CL: Growing up in Raleigh, NC State is kind of on a pedestal with all sports. It’s always been something that I watched and been a fan of.
When I got on the portal, I got the call from y’all. I was obviously super intrigued, just because of who NC State is, and who you are. Then after I took my visit, it was kind of a no-brainer after meeting the staff, meeting you, seeing the plan you have for NC State and the plan for Raleigh.
It’s kind of a no-brainer. This summer has been great. We’ve gotten a lot better as a team. I’ve gotten a lot better as a player.
WW: We’re very, very excited to have him with us, and we’re looking forward to him having a great season and a great career for NC State.
We’re excited to be here at Millbrook High School. We appreciate them for hosting us and getting Colt back to his roots a little bit. And that’s this episode of Around Raleigh.
We’ll see you next time.
