Will Wade gave us a clue on how he’s going to use Darrion Williams to create offense

For those looking for hints at how Wade is looking to create offense, I found his short segment on Darrion Williams pretty revealing.

For those who criticized the lack of movement in the Keatts half-court offense, you’ll like this.

Over Keatts’ tenure, you saw a ton of ball screen action to put the defense into motion and make them make decisions. Obviously, the high pick-and-roll works, but you need more than just that and while NC State tried a lot of stuff, not much worked.

However, there was the DJ Burns year, which peaked when NC State went on its Final Four run. The offense looked unstoppable then, and that was because you could put the defense in a blender simply by throwing the ball into the post and letting Burns back down. They had to decide if they wanted to double, and if they did, Burns would find the open man. If they didn’t bring the double, they got eaten alive by the big man.

The amount of havoc you can create with a versatile big who can score on the blocks, but also pop out and shoot it, or find an open cutter, is crazy. For all of the work you see guards putting into one on one dribble moves, the entire point is to get their man on their shoulder and demand help side defense, which causes the entire defense to be forced into rotation.

Darrion Williams can make all of that happen, simply by catching the basketball with their back to the basket on the block.

He’s a big man with great vision who can score off the bounce or with his back to the basket. He’s also an elite passer and playmaker.

Here is what Will Wade had to say about Williams and how he plans on using him…

“He’s someone who can play everywhere. When the ball is in his hands, good things are going to happen. He can either make a shot, or make a pass, find the open guy. Good things happen when he has the ball.”

“Darrion has incredible feel. He’s someone we have bring the ball up the court, we move him around, he’s someone that we can play a lot of different positions. He can play all five spots. Being able to do that and manipulate matchups. He makes the game easy.”

“The biggest thing he can do (and Q can too)…they can put the defense in rotation without an on-ball screen with their post-up game. If you don’t trap them, they’ll go lay the ball in. If you do trap them, they’re both good passers and can pass out, and we’re playing 4 on 3 and the dominos are knocked down and we’re off to the races.”

“Everyone works on ball screen coverage and that sort of thing. Well, when you have on-ball screens and you can put them in rotation in other ways, and Darrion does a tremendous job of that.”
