CBS COVER 3 Podcast on whether NC State should move on from Doeren; “I would bet a lot of money you’d do worse.”

I know some of you will tell me to stick to basketball commentary, but I can’t help myself! NC State’s ‘Dave Doeren Dilemma’ is just too interesting to me, and I want to weigh in with a few thoughts.

First, watch this clip…

Ok, for those of you who refused to watch, I’ll recap.

This is the CBS COVER 3 Podcast, which has about 61k YouTube subscribers and is one of the bigger pods in college football.

They got a mailbag question asking if Dave Doeren has reached his ceiling at NC State? And honestly, I’m being kind with the way I worded that. The guy who wrote in was pretty brutal towards Dave.

The Cover3 guys gave the argument for Doeren. Basically, explaining that NC State fans’ expectations are unjustifiable, saying, “I’d bet a lot of money you’d do worse.”

He then correctly states that Doeren has NC State at the 95th percentile of their program.

Ok, so look, I hear that argument, but the guy who wrote in did explain that Doeren was sub .500 in the ACC. That caused Bud Elliott to say that he had to go back and check that. He then essentially blames that on the two really bad seasons (one being the 0-8 first season.)

This is a bit confusing to me because, yes, those two bad seasons have a big impact on him being below .500 in ACC play, but those are two of his 13 seasons, so I’m not sure why you’d exclude them unless it was simply to win your argument on air.

I also think it was kind of weird that he admitted that he had to go back and make sure the ‘sub .500 in ACC play’ stat was correct. It shows that Bud found that stat hard to believe, which shows you that maybe his perception of NC State Football may not match the reality.

The guy who writes in also explains that Doeren is 6-26 against Top 25 opponents. Bud Elliot doesn’t comment on this stat and just moves on.

I think this little snippet sums up the NC State fanbase right now.

A big part of the fanbase are frustrated. After the flurry of 8 and 9-win seasons, the fan base wanted to take the next step. And then came last year’s disappointing 6-win season and now losing 2 of the first 5 games has them nervous we’re headed in the wrong direction. These people want to move on from Doeren and bring in a fresh face to see if we can aget over this 9 win hump.

On the other hand, there are those who look at Doeren’s career in the context of NC State football history. Those people are saying that Dave has done what we asked him to do and we really can’t do much better.

Where do you stand as a Wolfpack fan?

I’ll be digging into this a lot more later, especially the angle of how the Will Wade hire could throw a wrinkle in NC State’s Football plans going forward…
