What started as a quiet report out of the transfer portal on May 28 has quickly turned into one of the biggest early wins of the new NC State baseball era.
Just days after Baseball America’s Jacob Rudner broke the news that Wright State second baseman Hunter Warren would enter the portal, the 6-foot, 180-pound infielder from Moline, Illinois, has committed to the Wolfpack.
Warren becomes the first transfer commitment under new head coach Chris Hart, who was promoted in May after 22 seasons on the NC State staff. For a program transitioning after Elliott Avent’s retirement, landing a bat with Warren’s profile is exactly the kind of move that signals stability and ambition.
Who is Hunter Warren?
Warren didn’t just put up numbers at Wright State; he dominated the Horizon League while showing the exact traits that translate to higher-level competition.
2026 (Redshirt Sophomore Season):
- .361 average
- 8 home runs
- 12 doubles
- 15 stolen bases
- 41 RBIs
- All-Horizon League First Team
He posted an elite (super low) 8.6% strikeout rate, and a strong 0.85 K/BB ratio. Defensively, he posted a .982 fielding percentage while primarily manning second base.
And it’s not like this is some aberration. He had a huge freshman season as well.
2025 (Freshman Season):
- .328/.423/.408
- 15 doubles, 45 RBI, 54 runs scored in 61 games
- Horizon League Freshman of the Year
- All-Horizon League First Team
Over two seasons he started all 116 games, hit a combined .344/.429/.465 with 9 homers, 23 stolen bases, and 86 RBI. The advanced profile is exactly what NC State fans love: plus contact skills, excellent zone discipline, emerging power, and plus speed.
Great fit for Hart and the Pack
New coach Chris Hart built his reputation as one of the nation’s top hitting coaches and recruiters. Warren is the ideal type of player for a Hart-led offense, he’s a guy who already controls the strike zone at a high level and has shown he can add power without sacrificing contact.
In the ACC, where velocity and breaking stuff are elite, Warren’s low strikeout rate and advanced approach give him a real chance to contribute immediately in 2027. His ability to play second base cleanly while offering offensive upside addresses a key area for the Wolfpack.
More than likely, All-ACC 2nd Baseman Luke Nixon is MLB Draft bound. Landing Warren as his replacement is a home run.
He’ll spend this summer with the Cotuit Kettleers in the prestigious Cape Cod League , the perfect proving ground to face top-tier pitching before arriving in Raleigh.
NC State connection
This commitment also carries a fun connection: Warren played his first two seasons under Alex Sogard, the longtime Wright State head coach and former NC State player. With Hart now leading the program and the staff looking to add another assistant, Sogard’s name has surfaced as a potential candidate. Whether that happens or not, Warren’s commitment already shows the new regime can attract talent that was previously developing at mid-major programs.
For NC State fans, this is the kind of portal addition that matters. Not just a name, but a high-floor, high-upside college performer with two years of eligibility remaining who profiles as a potential everyday infielder in one of the toughest conferences in the country.
