2019 Football Recruiting
Chris Toudle is a 6'4", 215 athlete from Wilmington Hoggard HS.
He was a former QB at the JV level before he moved up to Varsity and became a Wide Receiver full time last season. Junior Stats were 32 catches for 556 yards and 11 Touchdowns.
Here is his film: http://www.hudl.com/profile/9294968/Chris-Toudle
Upon reviewing his film, here are some strengths and weaknesses:
Strengths: Frame is long, very strong hands, long strider, finds holes in coverage schemes well, good footwork in and out of passing route breaks, very physical blocking downfield on running plays, good speed for his size, very athletic with the ball in his hands
Weaknesses: Needs to get stronger to break more tackles after receptions, Needs to improve top-end speed, relies on size too much at times in the passing game to get catches, needs to high point the ball better at times (several catches were at his waist on long pass plays).
At his current size and athleticism combination, he could very well grow into a vertical threat as a Tight End/Y type player, or he could continue to develop as a WR.
Also runs track and plays basketball at Hoggard. He has run the 100 meters as fast as 11.64. Averaged 8.2 points per game in basketball this past season.
We just offered him a scholarship in February, so kudos to our staff for identifying him and closing on him fast. He committed while on a trip to Raleigh tonight.
Look for this weekend to potentially be a huge recruiting weekend for State.
Lots of marquee talent is coming to Raleigh.
Expected in Raleigh this weekend are:
4* DE Savion Jackson, 3* CB Shyheim Battle, 3* OT Carter Colquitt, 3* TE Kyle Bilodeau, 3* OG Zovon Lindsay, 3* CB Jalen Frazier, 4* ATH JR Walker, 3* CB Isaiah Kemp, 4* DT CJ Clark, 3* CB/S Deumbre Ginyard, 3* WR Donavan Greene, 3* DE Terrell Dawkins, 4* S Khalid Martin, 3* OG Jamari Williams, and 3* OT Kaleb Boateng.
I honestly look for us to get at least 2 commitments this weekend, if not more.
Worth noting that Greene and Kemp are currently committed to Duke, but could be looking around.
Latest free Pack Pride Podcast had some interesting updates:
- We are still working hard to try to get QB Sam Howell's interest to stay in his top schools list.
- We are currently leading for 4* S JR Walker, 4* S Khalid Martin, 3* OT Carter Colquitt, 3* DT Zovon Lindsay, and 4* LB Traveon Freshwater. PP analysts think that at least 2 of them could commit to us soon.
- Big time 2020 QB Luke Douty visited State this weekend. He will be one of the top 5 QBs in the country in the 2020 class. His parents and him have visited State quite a few times, we were one of his first offers. His parents really like State a lot.
- Wide Receivers will be a position of need in the 2019 recruiting class, we could legitimately take at least 3 more in this year's class.
The fact that big name NFL coaches are showing up at our Pro day can't hurt our prospects going forward. Seems momentum is building.
One thing that didn't make it into this week's column:
It's a BIG DEAL...
Target 4* TE Luke Deal has scheduled an official visit to Raleigh for the weekend of April 5-7.
With the changes in recruiting cycle and the early signing period in December, recruits can now take official visits before their senior year starts.
We are going up against some big time powerhouse programs to land Deal.
We were one of his first scholarship offers, and I think we have a very good chance to land him.
More about Deal:
6'5", 230. Rated the #13 Tight End in the country (4*) by 24/7 sports and Scout, the #24 Tight End in the country (3*) by Rivals, NR by ESPN.
He is a local kid (Greenwood, South Carolina), but I fear that we will have to overcome the allure of Clemson, who has recently offered him a scholarship and win him over with the prospects of immediate playing time.
He is also scheduling official visits to Michigan on April 13th and Notre Dame on April 16th.
Target 4* S Treron Collins is visiting State this weekend.
He is another tall, athletic safety who we are looking very good for.
It should be very interesting to see how many safeties we take in this year's class.
I could easily see us taking 3 safeties in this year's recruiting class, especially if we take the projected 22-25 players.
Other safeties we are looking good for right now are:
4* S Khalid Martin from East Forsyth HS (NC) - Visited last weekend
4* S Kaiir Elam from The Benjamin School (FL) - Visited last weekend
4* S JR Walker from Northeastern HS (NC) - Visited last weekend, may take official soon
3* S Brandon Hill from Wekiva HS (FL)
Target 4* DE Derrick McClendon from Tucker HS in Georgia has whittled his list down to his top 5 schools.
The top 5 schools are Georgia, Tennessee, LSU, Florida, and us.
He is currently rated the #17 Weakside Defensive End in the country (4*) by Rivals.
He has already visited Raleigh and may come back for the Spring Game.
Target 3* QB Sam Johnson from Walled Lake HS in Michigan (same high school as K Kyle Bambard) will be visiting State for the Spring Game.
Packman, is the assumption that all of these recruits are basically viewed as insurance in case of injury to the kid from Jersey (whose name escapes me)? Should we expect him to win the job as a redshirt freshman next year?
I think we are to the point now in our program that we are recruiting competitive depth, but also to the point where we can go after the best available.
Devin Leary is our QB of the future behind Ryan Finley, but don't overlook Matt McKay (redshirt freshman). I think McKay will surprise some people with his athleticism and touch in the passing game tomorrow in the spring game.
As we have seen in multiple areas in the ACC (FSU being a great example), a team cannot have enough quality depth at QB.
Big "If" we offer Johnson. Latest intel looks like we are really going after Jalon Jones hard now since he has visited and had a great visit. We are going to have to fight off some big dogs for him, but if Finley can have a big year and get drafted highly (as expected), I think we will land a big time QB in this year's class as well.
