This could be a pretty good team next year. Lots of new faces, but all guys that fit the system. Keatts may be able to go with 2 teams that constantly press and wear teams down. The depth looks amazing.

Team 1:
1- Markell
2- Beverly
3- Devon Daniels
4-Dorn
5- Funderburk

Team 2
1- Blake Harris
2- CJ Bryce
3- Bey
4- Steere
5- Bates

reserves: Jerricole Hellems, Batts, Cacok (if he comes, maybe he starts)

I believe if Cacok does come as a graduate transfer he will start for us. Funderburke and the freshmen will have a lot to learn before Keatts can implement his system He mentioned the other day in the hustle series that they have about 75% of the system installed this season. By starting Cacok the system would be 100% from day one which will make a big difference in the early games. I also believe we will be more aggressive in our scheduling for next year which makes Cacok even more important early. If he does not come then I believe Funderburke will be the starter early in the season.

I think it will be very interesting to see who starts at the #2 spot next year. BB may 'offense' his way into the starting lineup, or maybe is equally effective in a microwave role. Would like to think he'll become a better defender, but he's not going to get quicker or taller, so I am skeptical.

If we sign Simons, maybe he or  MJ starts at the #2 to have both on the court?

Cacok is only 6'7", but has freaky springs. If he grad xfers in, it would be interesting to see if he alternates at #4 with TD, and we start one of our three 6'9" guys at the #5 - or if our starting lineup is small with him at the #5.

The one thing we can be certain of is, there's going to have to be a constant flow of substitutes to get everybody playing time. I can't recall ever having the quantity of talented players on one team. Without counting Y7 or any other signing, we'll have 8 4-star, 3 3-star, and 1 2-star player. That's a ton of talent to keep happy. And the funny thing is, at least initially, most of the playing time will likely go to the 3-star (Beverly, Dorn, Daniels) and the 2-star (Bryce) players along with MJ.

How can we say that most of the playing will likely go to Bryce and Daniels?  Now I would take Simmons for 1 year over any three of our players for three years with the possible exception of Yurtseven who still has two years left.

I do like our team and I’d like us to build a core of veterans but I don’t see anyone irreplaceable for a talent like Simmons.   May we never as fans (as some have recently expressed) hope to turn away ‘one and done talent’ with the fear that we don’t want to lose “good” talent to transfer who might stay three years (Cringe).

@papajohn I'm pretty sure Beverly and Daniels were both 4 star kids on at least one of the scouting networks

I'm sure you are right. And if so, I have to believe (but am too lazy to attempt to prove)  that next year's 'star power' (aka gross star count) is the highest we've ever had. Now, can they play?? 😆

Recently you did a write up on Funderburk which got me curious about him and I looked up his recruiting rank. The site I randomly landed on that had what I was looking for was 247. So I decided to look them all up and it made sense to use the same site for all to get the same relative scoring. IDK if 247 is more or less reliable than any others. (as you see, if I got it wrong, I am blaming you - LOL - kidding)

On 247:

Daniels - 3 stars - ranked 203

https://247sports.com/player/devon-daniels-64806

Braxton Beverly - 3 stars - ranked 321

https://247sports.com/Player/Braxton-Beverly-68270

Just for grins, here's the rest as per 247 (name - stars - rank):

  • Bates - 4 - 100
  • Steere - 4 - 122
  • Bey - 4 - 124
  • Hellems - 4 - 125
  • Bryce - 2 - (not ranked)
  • Funderburk - 4 - 73
  • Harris - 4 - 120
  • Johnson - 4 - 58
  • Batts Jr - 4 - 98
  • Dorn - 3 - 386

Potential recruits

  • Anfernee Simons - 5 - 7
  • Devontae Cacok - not ranked (nothing on 247 at all)
  • supplemental info - Rivals has Cacok as 3 stars, but not ranked

Purely based on what' i've seen so far.  If we DO land Cacock he starts over Funderburke. If we land Simons he is gonna have to battle for that starting 2 guard role.

You really think that Daniels is good enough to start over Simons? If so, our roster is lookin’ pretty good for next season!

I think the best team we could start on November 6 would be these guys, plus Cacok at the 5.  Not to suggest that another lineup might not be better by the end of February, but to start the season, I think this would be our strongest potential lineup.

Every starter would have spent at least one season playing (or in the case of Daniels, practicing) in the Keatts system, and obviously Bryce and Cacok each played it a couple of seasons at UNCW.  I would think having those guys as models to see how to play the game the right way would greatly accelerate the learning curve for the incoming class.  And Cacok in particular would be a great role model for the bigs.

So if Y7 is leaving, as we all assume, I really like the idea of adding Cacok.  (but I don't even think he's announced that he is transferring, has he? If he has, I haven't seen it. And if he does transfer, there will be others interested. Bryce had interest from UVA, WF, GT, and Miami - in addition to his finalists, SC and us.)

I think it is safe to assume our OOC schedule will be quite a bit more challenging next season, I'm sure KK doesn't want to have to listen to that 'weak OOC scheduling' crap ever again.  So we'll need to start strong and rapidly begin integrating all of these nice new pieces before we hit the tougher games.

Anyone besides me think Yurt will return next year?  I think he will declare again to get evaluated.  He has improved a great deal from last year but I think he still needs another year to get stronger down low.  Maybe spending the summer in the weight room with Thunder Dan may help!  If so, watch out!

Love the quality depth of next year's projected roster. Competition at every position = everyone giving everything they have on every offensive and defensive possession.

With Yurt it depends on what he wants and what he thinks Keatts can give him. I think NBA scouts will tell him he's an early second rounder. Is that good enough for him? If so, he's gone. I do think he needs to add strength and I do think he can be a mid-first round talent, but I think he will feel like his year to be showcased was this year and he'll be glad he accomplished what he did.

I could be wrong and if I was Yurt I'd definitely stay another year, but he's always seemed ready to make the NBA jump and if they tell him he'll be drafted anywhere, I think he goes.

As for Cacok, no he hasn't announced anything. All speculation at this point, but if he did transfer it would be for the sole purpose of joining Bryce and Keatts. He would provide a veteran in the middle who already knows he fits the system. He could be a very valuable asset to Keatts with so many young bigs on the roster next year.

Don't be surprised if we have one more exit.

He's already be evaluated.

Batts? I really hope that's just scuttlebutt with no actual merit to it

Same here.  Batts has a bright future ahead of him.  His quickness is right there with Markell.  Just need to develop that jump shot and he will be a solid player.

Batts is the only guy that would be a transfer risk. Maybe Beverly? But he gets a ton of pt and NC State really went to bat for him with all the NCAA mess so I doubt it.

Markell is a risk to go pro after this season. Like @thenewclass13 said, he seems to really struggle with school.

I guess the only other guy would be Dorn but that doesn't make sense whatsoever

Aside from Y7 going pro, Batts or Markell are the most likely candidates to leave.  Batts is who I expect it to be even though he seems to like Keatts, he just may want more playing time than he feels he will get here.   As for Markell, I don't think he'd transfer but I do think it's possible he'd pull a Ted Kapita and opt to play pro somewhere rather than remain in school.

Realistically, the only other options are Braxton or Dorn.  Both feel very unlikely to me as they are getting quality minutes already.  Dorn could go as a grad transfer but why would he?  BB could go if he's worried about losing minutes to the other players but that seems contrary to his nature, IMO.

Who else could it be?

Abu (Sr so gone)

A Freeman (gone)

L Freeman (gone)

Hunt (gone)

Bryce (just transferred in)

Daniels ( (just transferred in)

Harris  (just transferred in)

Rest of next year's roster are recruits.  Guess somebody could ask out of their commitment but why would they at this point?

So if we do have another transfer, my money is on Batts as much as I'd like to see him stay.

Dorn could potentially move on as a Grad Transfer but I just don't see it.

Markell is gone but I think that's after next year, but I do think he gets evaluated this year.
