Here is a look at how NC State’s opponents did in Week 1 of the college football season:

East Carolina (1-0) kicked off the Scottie Montgomery era by demolishing Western Carolina 52-7. Senior quarterback Philip Nelson put up video game esque numbers, connecting on 28 of his 32 attempts, for 398 yards and 5 touchdowns (234.5 Passing Efficiency). Junior Running Back Anthony Scott almost pulled a double-double, rushing for 120 yards (10.9 yards per carry) as well as picking up another 90 through the air. Scott also picked up 2 touchdowns through the air and 1 on the ground. Senior James Summers almost crossed the century mark on the ground, rushing for 95 yards on 10 carries. Senior Wideout Zay Jones had a gaudy 10 receptions for 180 yards and a touchdown.

The Pirates racked up 688 yards of total offense. If there is something to frown upon in this performance, it is the fact that they gave up 320 yards of total offense to the Catamounts, and allowed them to average 3.9 yards per carry.

Old Dominion (1-0) defeated Hampton 54-21. The game was close for over half the game, before the Monarchs scored 23 unanswered points to close the game. Senior Quarterback David Washington was 10 of 18 for 174 yards and 4 touchdowns.  Junior Running Back Ray Lawry rushed 14 times for 110 yards and a touchdown, as well as 2 receptions for 62 yards and a touchdown. ODU had 500 yards of total offense.

Wake Forest (1-0) beat Tulane 7-3, in what looked like a baseball score. Consdiering the fact that their Quarterback didn’t pass for over 100 yards, and they didn’t have a Running Back or Wide Receiver go for over 30 yards, I don’t have much else to say about this box score.

Actually, I lied. The fact that the Demon Deacons walked out of this game with a W was miraculous. Tulane had 280 yards of offense compared to Wake’s  175, and the Green Wave won the time of possession battle by almost a 10 minute margin.

#10 Notre Dame (0-1) in double overtime to the Texas Longhorns 47-50 in a shootout. Junior QB DeShone Kizer tried to put the Irish on his back. He brought them back from a 31-14 deficit to take the lead, but it wasn’t enough. Kizer threw 5 touchdowns on the day. Notre Dame was one of three top-10 teams to lose on opening weekend.

#2 Clemson (1-0) went down to Auburn and squeaked out a 19-13 victory over the Tigers. While the reigning ACC POY Deshaun Watson was adequate (248 yards passing, 1 td, 1 int), Wayne Gallman and Mike Williams that were most impressive. Junior RB Gallman was a workhorse, rushing 30 times for 123 yards and a touchdown. The return of Junior Wideout Mike Williams was probably the story of the night. After suffering a season ending injury in the season opener last year against Wofford, many might have forgotten how special he was. He reminded them with 9 receptions for 174 yards.

#19 Louisville (1-0) crushed UNC Charlotte 70-14, and Sophomore Quarterback Lamar Jackson put on a clinic. He accounted for 8 touchdowns (6 passing and 2 rushing), which was a school record, in the first half. He didn’t even take a snap in the second half.  His final line: 17/23 for 286 yards and 6 touchdowns/11 rushes for 119 yards and 2 touchdowns. He made NC State fans cry last year. He might make the whole ACC weep this year.

Boston College (0-1) lost to Georgia Tech in Ireland 14-17. The Golden Eagles have lost 9 straight games, and took a 14-7 lead into the 14th quarter, but it wasn’t enough. Sophomore Running Back Jon Hilliman rushed 17 times for 102 yards and 1 touchdown.

#4 Florida State (1-0) trailed #11 Ole Miss 28-6 in the second quarter, but rallied to score 33 straight points, and won the game 45-34. Freshman QB Deondre Francois made sure that people knew another name on the Seminole roster beside Dalvin Cook. He was 33 of 52 for 419 yards and 2 touchdowns. Speaking of Junior Running Back Dalvin Cook, he had 192 total yards (91 rushing and 101 receiving).

Syracuse (1-0) squashed Colgate 33-7 in the Orange’s first game under Dino Babers. The Orange were impressive, tallying 544 yards of total offense, and only allowing Colgate to put up 143 of their own. Sophomore Eric Dungey was stellar, connecting on 34 of his 40 passes for 355 yards and 2 touchdowns. Senior Wide Receiver Amba Etta-Tawo caught 12 passes for 210 yards and a touchdown.

Miami (1-0) decimated Florida A&M 70-3. Junior QB Brad Kaaya only threw for 135 yards, but 4 of his 12 completions were for touchdowns. He didn’t need to do much through the air, because 3 Hurricane running backs ran for over 100 yards. The Hurricanse haven’t been ranked in the AP poll since November 10th, 2013, but it looks like that will soon change.

#18 Georgia’s Nick Chubb ran all over #22 UNC (0-1) for 222 yards, as the Bulldogs defeated the Tar Heels 33-24. UNC was winning 24-14 in the third quarter, but the Bulldogs scored 21 unanswered points to win the game. UNC’s Junior Running Back Elijah Hood ran the ball 10 times for 72 yards, and it looks like in 2016 everyone will continue to ask why Larry Fedora doesn’t give him the ball more.

Does the Addition of the UVA Series Equal the Elimination of NC State’s Series with App St.?

Published

on

Earlier this week it was announced that NC State and Virginia would play one another in a home-and-home series, with the Wolfpack hosting in 2025, and the Cavaliers hosting in 2026.

Prior to the announcement, NC State already had their non-conference slate booked for both of those seasons.

As a result of the addition of the Virginia series, a previously scheduled non-conference game from each season would need to be dropped. While it hasn’t been officially announced by the school, Joe Giglio and David Glenn seem to think that the series with Appalachian State is going to be dropped.

It would make the most sense, considering the Mountaineers were the only opponent the Wolfpack was scheduled to play in both 2025 and 2026. It would also make sense, considering the fact that ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips isn’t a fan of ACC teams playing Group of 5 schools on the road.

I will tell you this much. The Mountaineer faithful certainly believe NC State is dropping the series with App State, and it just takes a little scrolling on X (formerly Twitter) to get a read on their feelings on the situation.

This situation brings to mind the bill that has been proposed in the North Carolina House of Representatives that would force NC State and UNC to play App St., ECU and UNC Charlotte in Football, Men’s Basketball and Women’s Basketball.

If the addition of UVA means the elimination of App St. on NC State’s schedule, what are your thoughts? Share in the comments.

CBS Sports Ranks Dave Doeren as 1 of the Top-20 Coaches in College Football

Published

on

CBS Sports released their Top-25 Power 4 Coaches in College Football, and NC State’s Dave Doeren came in at #16. Heading into last season, he went into the season ranked #25.

16) Dave Doeren: The NC State coach finally gets some overdue credit. He’s always hovered around the bottom of our top 25 or just outside it, and now he finds himself firmly entrenched in it thanks to all the changes at the top. Coaches who take mid-tier programs and overachieve never get enough credit, in my estimation, and the consistency Doeren has established at NC State — where he spent most of his time in a division with Clemson and Florida State — is one of the most impressive things any coach in the country has done. I’m glad to see Doeren getting closer to the top 15. 2023 rank: 25 (+9) (CBS Sports)

Numerous CBS Sports’ analysts voted in the poll, and Tom Fornelli actually ranked Doeren #8.

ACC Coaches that made the Top-25

3. Dabo Swinney (Clemson)

8. Mike Norvell (FSU)

16. Dave Doeren (NC State)

19. Jeff Brohm (Louisville)

NC State and UVA Agree to Home-and-Home Non-Conference Games

Published

on

NC State announced this morning that the Wolfpack and UVA will play in a home-and-home non-conference series, with the game in 2025 being in Raleigh, and the game in 2026 being in Charlottesville.

Image

To reiterate, despite the fact that both teams are in the ACC, these games are considered non-conference games, and won’t count toward conference records. This is similar to what UNC and Wake Forest did a few years back.

Here’s what’s interesting about the addition of these games in 2025 and 2026. Prior to the announcement, NC State already had 4 non-conference games scheduled for both years.

It would be my assumption that one of the previously scheduled non-conference games for each season will not take place now.
