Summary of Dave Doeren’s Weekly Presser

Published

on

Here’s a summary of NC State head coach Dave Doeren had to say to the media today in his weekly press conference.

Looking Back at Furman:

  • Pleased with the +3 in the turnover margin.
  • Pleased to hold Furman to under 3 yards per carry in the run game with no rushing touchdowns.
  • Pleased NC State rushed for over 6 yards per carry with 5 rushing touchdowns.
  • Ryan Finley got into a good rhythm, and his receivers made good catches for him.
  • It was nice to have the starting 5 offensive linemen out there for the first time.
  • Outside of the couple of return motion i-violation plays that we had, he thought they handled a difficult offense in a short period of time well.
  • Special teams. – Bambard kicked a couple of touch backs, which was improvement for him. Stephen Louis blocked a punt.

On FSU:

  • Return all of their offensive linemen from last year. Always been really good at running the outside zone. There are 62 career starts on the line.
  • Both of their tailbacks (Cam Akers and Jacques Patrick) are tremendous players. Big backs that can break tackles.
  • Big receivers. They have a 6’3″ (Keith Gavin) and 6’4″ (Tammorrion Terry) guy.
  • Obviously no college game footage to watch of Freshman Quarterback James Blackman, but from his tape in high school, he has a big arm and can throw the deep ball. There really isn’t much footage of him running the football in high school, so not sure what he can do there.
  • On defense they return 9 starters, and 3 Senior linebackers. Play a lot of nickel and dime schemes, a lot of man coverage.

On Jakobi Meyers:

  • He didn’t play last week because he didn’t have a good week of preparation last week. Just didn’t feel like he was prepared to play. Hope he gets back to form.

On Mike Stevens:

  • He practiced last week. Took a lot of reps. Trainers say he’s ready to go. We expect him to play. Whether or not he starts, we’ll have to see at the end of the week.

On Dexter Wright:

  • See what is stated above in regards to Mike Stevens.

On Carson Wise:

  • I’m disappointed that he missed the kick, but I’m still confident in him. He has connected on 45-yards and in consistently throughout practice.

On putting pressure on their true freshman quarterback:

That would be ideal. We’ll have to go through 7 guys sometimes to get to him, because they use their tight end and running backs in protection schemes.

On whether or not the South Carolina loss has put a chip on their shoulder:

  • No. I think we’ve been playing with a chip on our shoulder since week 7 of last year.

On the play of Roseboro and Street against Furman:

  • Thought a lot of the defensive line was trying to do too much against Marshall, and this week they week they were reeled back in.
