Today has been an exciting day in the world of NC State athletics.
Word started getting out a week ago that NC State head coach Dave Doeren was a candidate in the Ole’ Miss job. However, before that could really get legs, Ole’ Miss hired internally.
Then the attention turned to Tennessee as rumors started flying that the Vols had reached out to Doeren as a candidate. For this to even really work, Tennessee would likely have to miss on their top choice, which was OKST head man Mike Gundy. This morning, things really got interesting as Gundy decided to stay put.
The attention then went to Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm and it appeared that was a done deal.
So the news that Doeren was the backup to Brohm didn’t really mean much.
Until news broke that Brohm actually did not accept and instead was going to stay put.
Then there were the sources from the NC State side that were saying Doeren was already meeting with Tennessee today.
And the ones that said those were not true.
But other notable names said they were.
ESPN is now weighing in, confirming Brohm is off the table and Doeren is their target.
Will Doeren take the job? Or might he be jockeying for a raise? Did he meet with the Vols, or did he not?
Actually, if you look back a couple weeks you might see something you may have missed. Doeren may not have been as happy with NC State as we thought. He injected a little jab at the administration in his interview with ESPN.
Was he angry that after 4 seasons of losing, Debbie Yow was thinking about moving on? Could be. Could he have had wandering eyes all season just waiting for this type of opportunity? Maybe so.
Or maybe this is all about getting a raise. But if that’s the case then this type of hardball, with this type of fanbase just isn’t going to play well.
We’ll keep a close eye on the situation and keep you updated as this ‘source war’ continues.
