According to Dan Wolken of USAToday, NC State Athletic Director Debbie Yow and Football Head Coach Dave Doeren have been
“engaged in a protracted and somewhat contentious standoff over his contract extension negotiations in recent days, multiple people with knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports, a staredown that is connected to Doeren’s involvement in multiple coaching searches, including Tennessee and previously Ole Miss.” (USA)
According to his source, Doeren was
“close to becoming the next coach at Ole Miss last weekend and canceled planned recruiting trips for his assistants last Sunday in anticipation of that announcement.” (USA)
This became null and void when Ole Miss made Interim head coach Matt Luke their permanent head coach. Wolken’s sources say that Doeren’s representatives have also actively been trying to get him into Tennessee and Mississippi St.
According to Wolken’s sources, NC State has made an offer
“to Doeren that would increase his pay and give his assistants multiyear contracts but that the situation remains in flux for now.
She called their bluff, one person with knowledge of the situation said.” (USA)
Wolken isn’t a nobody, and neither are his sources. He was the one that broke stuff about Jimbo Fisher and his possible departure to Florida St., which looks to have some legs.
From my reading of all this, it looks like Doeren hasn’t been pleased with what NC State has put on the table, and he is jockeying for more, and he’s willing to go elsewhere to get it. With that said, if NC State puts the right number on the table, he could stay. In conclusion, NC State has to determine how much he is worth. Sure NC State took a step in the right direction this year, but it wasn’t nearly the step it could have been. Would they seriously drop $5-6 million for Doeren?
