The Tarheels will travel to Raleigh to face NC State this Wednesday night at 8 o’clock with coverage on The ACC Network. Carolina is 21-5 thus far and 9-3 in ACC play. The Tarheels are currently first in the ACC and are coming off a tough 78-86 loss at Duke. What do you need to know before this Wednesday night?
Carolina could not stop Grayson Allen as they lost 78-86 in Cameron Indoor.
Justin Jackson played well scoring 21 points on 8-13 shooting from the field. Joel Berry pushed the pace but was not efficient scoring 15 points on 5-13 shooting for the night. UNC as a team shot just 10-18 from the foul line, well below their season average of 70%. Grayson Allen had clean looks in route to his 25 points, including 7 made three-pointers. Defensively the Tarheels struggled to contain Duke’s dribble-drive attack which led to breakdowns surrendering 13 made three-pointers. Duke also outrebounded the Heels 31-30, Carolina missed Isiah Hicks underneath. UNC has almost a full week off to move on and prepare for NC State this Wednesday night. Roy Williams is giving his group some downtime to recover from some nagging injuries before Wednesday night’s tip.
Last time UNC outplayed NC State.
NC State could not get anything going the last time they played UNC. The Pack lost by 51 points as they failed to compete against the Tarheels. Joel Berry and Justin Jackson led the Heels as they scored 19 and 21 points respectively only logging 23 minutes a piece. In total UNC took NC State out of the game by playing with plenty of energy and hard-nosed defense. Joel Berry and company neutralized Dennis Smith as they forced him into turnovers and fouls from the start. NC State was outplayed in every category of importance as one would expect when losing by 51 points.
North Carolina will try and avoid a trap game Wednesday night.
Roy Williams understands the importance of rivalry games and will have his group focused this Wednesday night. NC State will hope the Tarheels are overlooking them as they beat them by 51 points earlier in the season and have College Gameday coming to Chapel Hill this Saturday. The next two foes on UNC’s schedule following NC State are UVA and Louisville. These two games could go long ways in determining the ACC regular season champ in addition to NCAA Tournament seeding. Can Carolina stay in the moment to knock off NC State? After NC State’s last few results safe money says yes; however, just when NC State looks dead they come away with a surprising result. Game time is at 8 o’clock with coverage on The ACC Network.
He’s had a lot of talent at Arizona and has done ok but I wouldn’t say he’s done great? Probably better coach than Gottfried but at this point that’s not saying a whole lot.
If you look at Gott’s accomplishments on paper it looks pretty good too. But both State and Arizona want championships. And Arizona has had more talent than State the last 10 years or so. I acknowledge that Arizona has done well but based on talent and expectations some could say they fell short.

My choices for new coach would begin with Creighton’s coach and Butler’s coach.

Just heard rumors that Gottfried fired at season’s end. I think it’s a mistake to keep him till then. Should fire him now and let one of the assistants take a shot at closing out season strong. Not a fan of Archie. Heard that he was telling ppl that State could not compete with unc/duke during his playing days.

Welcome back Tyler. I thought we had lost you guys. A trap game? OMG that is real wishful thinking.
@wolfpack74 if we are still writing through this season you are not losing us haha. A Trap game is real wishful thinking it is about the only thing we can hope for. But if NC State is NC State then they are capable of the surprising result right?
Today was the final day graduate players could enter the Portal.
This past season, O’Connell averaged 5.7 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.2 assists for the Wolfpack, starting 22 of the 41 games he played in.
O’Connell took over as NC State’s starting Point Guard on January 30th in a win against Miami.
He only scored in double figures in 9 of his 41 games this season, but 6 of those came in postseason play (5 in the ACC Tournament). O’Connell took things to another level in the ACC Tournament, playing aggressive on the offensive end, looking for his shot, and attacking the rim.
NC State played it’s best basketball of the season when O’Connell was running the show. He ranked 3rd in the ACC in Assist/Turnover Ratio (2.5).
Heading into next season, with a lineup filled with new faces, having the calming presence of a veteran leader like O’Connell is reassuring.
ECU Transfer Power Forward Ezra Ausar (6’9″/240) was on an Official Visit to NC State yesterday, and according to analysts at ON3 and 247Sports, things are trending in the right direction for the Wolfpack.
Jamie Shaw of ON3 submitted a prediction for Ausar to eventually commit to NC State yesterday morning.
Cory Smith of 247Sports submitted a crystal ball projection for Ausar to run with the Wolfpack this morning.
Ausar just wrapped up his Sophomore season in Greenville, averaging 11.4 points and 4.7 rebounds, shooting 51.4% from the field. As a Freshman, he was named to the AAC All-Freshman Team, averaging 9.8 points and 5.3 rebounds.
Ausar is a consensus 4-Star prospect in the Transfer Portal, and ON3 ranks him as the #60 overall player in the Portal and the #10 Power Forward.
Originally from Atlanta, Ausar played his Senior Season of High School at Liberty Heights Athletic Institute in Charlotte, North Carolina. ON3 ranked Ausar as a 4-Star prospect coming out of high school, the #94 overall player nationally, and the #2 player in the state of North Carolina.
Ausar has visited Seton Hall, Georgia Tech, met over Zoom with Georgetown, and had an in-home visit with Utah. John Calipari and his staff at Arkansas have been in touch with Ausar, as well as Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Virginia Tech, Arizona State, West Virginia, Iowa State and St. John’s. (Link)
At this point, it’s good news that Ausar has no visits scheduled after the visit to NC State.
Ausar has 2 years of eligibility remaining, and NC State currently has 1 scholarship remaining.
NC State Head Coach Kevin Keatts and the beloved DJ Burns were both Siren Sounders for the Canes this evening, with Carolina defeating the Islanders 6-3, winning the Round 1 series 4-1.
Me: Were you nervous?
Kevin Keatts: No! I just won nine elimination games in the NCAA Tournament!
I want Archie’s brother.
He’s had a lot of talent at Arizona and has done ok but I wouldn’t say he’s done great? Probably better coach than Gottfried but at this point that’s not saying a whole lot.
Accomplishments
4× Elite Eight (2008, 2011, 2014, 2015)
6× Sweet Sixteen (2008, 2009, 2011, 2013–2015)
9× NCAA Tournament bids (2006–2009, 2011, 2013–2016)
Much better than 95% of the Coaches in Division 1.
Ben Howland went to like 4 final fours. If we want a guy that would actually be interested in the job we should be targeting him.
If you look at Gott’s accomplishments on paper it looks pretty good too. But both State and Arizona want championships. And Arizona has had more talent than State the last 10 years or so. I acknowledge that Arizona has done well but based on talent and expectations some could say they fell short.

Inconsistency would be an understatement to describe this team. It could lose by 50 or pull out an upset. But my gut tells me it’s going to be ugly.
I would like to see the Cardiac Pack once again. I thought you guys had left since nothing was written about the debacle in Winston Salem.
