Recruiting Update – December 15, 2017

Ingle Commits!

3* ATH Tanner Ingle committed to NC State last night. He’s another super athletic prospect. Albeit, on the smaller side, could definitely project as a slot receiver, nickel-back, punt returner/kick returner specialist.

Recent Misses:

JUCO CB/S Aaron Maddox committed to Colorado.

JUCO TE Darrion Jones also committed to Colorado.

Former Commit DE/OL Devin Hayes commits to Florida Atlantic.

Spots Left in this cycle:  3-4 unless we suddenly have more attrition.

Speaking of attrition, Redshirt Freshman Wide Receiver Daeshawn Stephens has decided to leave the program.  This opens up another WR scholarship in the 2018 cycle, if we would like to use it.

2018 WR Targets Left:  3* Tra’Von King (From NJ), 3* Cadarius Gaskin (From FL), 3*  Bryce Thompson (From SC), and 3* Jeshaun Jones (From FL) could still be in play if we want to take another receiver in this year’s class.  Thompson is the surprise here because he was not listing us as “in play” until Shrine Bowl practices this week.

Early Signing Period:

This cycle is the first cycle that NCAA Football has ever had an early signing period. Early signing period is December 20 – 22nd.  Look for a large number of our current class prospects to sign early.  Signing early does not mean that they will enroll in January, but instead is a way for college coaches to ensure they will not have last minute defections right before National Signing Day.

Several experts around the country have suggested that Early Signing Period will net colleges about 70% or more of their total recruiting classes this year.

Here’s a few stories about it:

Other Good News:

Commit 4* QB Devin Leary was recently named the Gatorade Player of the Year in New Jersey.

Commit ATH De’Von Graves picked up his 4th * in Rivals’ rating update.  He is now the #19 Athlete in the country.

Commits S Malik Dunlap, LB Calvin Hart Jr, and DE Davontae McCrae all won state championships last weekend.

Big New Offer:

4* CB Taiyon Palmer (Archer HS – GA) has decommitted from Duke.

We have officially offered him a scholarship this week.

Palmer is rated as high as the #28 CB in the country by 247Sports.

Highlights of Palmer

Palmer’s athleticism is off the charts.  Scored a 114.03 in the SPARQ combine last summer.

We probably have some ground to make up with him, but our staff is known for closing quickly on their top targets.

Recent Visits:

4* OG Jovaughn Gwyn recently officially visited Raleigh. He is down to us and South Carolina.  Look for him to make a decision by the Early Signing Period.

Recruiting Calendar Information:

For those of you that might be curious about the Recruiting Calendar, here’s a link to the official Recruiting Calendar for this year:

NCAA

Long and short, December 18 – January 11 is a Dead Period.  December 20 through 22nd is the new signing period.

A Dead Period means that a coach may contact a recruit’s parents but cannot have direct contact with any recruit.

Shrine Bowl Practice Reports About Targets/Commits (Via 24/7 sports):

Target 3* ATH Bryce Thompson:  “The Irmo (S.C.) Dutch Fork was another explosive athlete that jumped out during Monday’s workouts. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound prospect made most of his plays as a receiver, but he also got plenty of work as a cornerback during the afternoon session. Thompson jetted past a corner for deep completion on a simple go route, while also being dangerous on crossing routes. The South Carolina lean is not as polished of a corner as he is a receiver, but the raw athleticism is there to be effective on the defensive side of the ball as well. ”

Commit 4* RB Ricky Person: ” The N.C. State was decisive running the ball on Monday while also looking smooth catching the ball out of the backfield. The Wake Forest (N.C.) Heritage standout would explode up field when given the slightest crease with little wasted movement. Standing 6-foot-2, 200-pounds, Person, a Top247 prospect, is a very impressive looking back off the hoof. ”

Commit 3* WR Devin Carter:  “This N.C. State commit was perhaps the most productive receiver for the North Carolina offense during day one. The big-bodied 6-foot-4, 205-pound Carter shields defenders from the ball to make catches and has a knack for getting open despite lacking great top end speed.”

3-Star 2025 Defensive Tackle Drayden Pavey (6’3″/305) will be taking an Official Visit to NC State on June 18th. He also has Official Visit’s scheduled for Purdue, Wisconsin and Arizona.

ON3 ranks Pavey as the #4 player in the state of Kentucky (Robert A. Taft High/Burlington, KY)

NC State has already made quite the impression. They only offered him on April 24th. Getting an Official Visit scheduled a week after offering a player is a good sign.

When Pavey released his Top-8 back in February, NC State was obviously on the list. It consisted of Miami (OH), Toledo, Boston College, West Virginia, Pitt, Cincinnati, Indiana and Purdue. Wisconsin is also new to the scene, offering Pavey on April 21st.

As a Junior, Pavey had 46 tackles 7.5 sacks and 9 tackles for loss.

All 4 recruiting databases rank Young as a Top-200 prospect nationally in the 2025 recruiting class, with ESPN, 247Sports and ON3 ranking him in the Top-35. 247Sports ranks him as the #29 overall player nationally, the #2 Safety and the #2 player in the state of North Carolina.

4-Star Safety Jontae Gilbert Has Locked in an Official Visit to NC State

Published

on

4-Star 2025 Safety Jontae Gilbert (6’1″/180) confirmed with me that he has locked in an Official Visit to NC State for the weekend of September 27-29, and he plans for it to be his last Official Visit.

Back in July of 2022, Gilbert committed to Ohio St., but last July he decommitted from the Buckeyes.

Gilbert also has Official Visits scheduled for UCF, South Carolina and USC.

At one point, Gilbert was a 5-star prospect, but now he is a consensus 4-star prospect, and a consensus Top-275 player. Rivals ranks him as the #70 overall player nationally in the 2025 recruiting class, and the #8 player in the state of Georgia.

NC State offered Gilbert in April of last year.

Recently, he has taken unofficial visits to, or been visited by Louisville, Auburn, Tennessee, Georgia St., Oregon, Clemson, Texas and South Carolina.

While he doesn’t have an Official Visit set up with Georgia, the Bulldogs are obviously a big player in Gilbert’s recruitment.

Gilbert plays for Douglass High School in Atlanta, Georgia.
