Today Sophomore point guard Markell Johnson made NC State history.
With 10 assists today against the Fighting Irish, Johnson has now had 4 straight games with double-digit assists.
1/21/18 – Miami – 14 assists
1/24/18 – @ Pitt – 12 assists
1/27/18 – @ UNC – 11 assists
2/3/18 – Notre Dame – 10 assists
Last week, when he increased his streak to three games against UNC, he tied NC State legend Chris Corchiani for the most consecutive games with double-digit assists in school history.
Today, Markell Johnson is in a league of his own.
Corchiani, in classic classy form, took to Twitter to congratulate Johnson.
This game in no way shows that Johnson is, or will be, a better point guard than Corchiani, but it shows that he is keeping great company.
Let’s put this record in perspective.
Corchiani not only is the all-time assists leader in NC State history, but he also ranks 2nd in ACC history.
Also, NC State has had a lot of other great point guards come through their doors.
Former Wolfpack head coach Sidney Lowe, and member of the 1983 national championship team, ranks 10th all-time in ACC history in career assists.
5 different NC State players have led the ACC in assists in a single season:
Sidney Lowe – 2x
Chris Corchiani – 2x
Spud Webb – 1x
Lorenzo Brown – 1x
Dennis Smith Jr. – 1x
None of them ever did what Johnson has done over the past 4 games.
Impressive.
