247: NC State’s 2018 Class is the Nations Sleeper Class

Published

on

247Sports Steve Wiltfong dished our the 2018 football recruiting class superlatives, and he believes that NC State’s Class is the nations Sleeper Class.

There are some big-time players in this NC State class that checks in at No. 26 nationally and No. 6 in the ACC. Payton Wilson has the traits to evolve into one of the best pass rushers in the country, Ricky Person is in the conversation as the top running back in the land, defensive lineman Alim McNeill and cornerback Taiyon Palmer bring unique athleticism to their position groups and quarterback Devin Leary is a two-time state Gatorade Player of the Year in New Jersey with a rocket arm. This is a group that could be the nucleus for Dave Doeren and his staff in taking the program to another level. (247)

247’s Chris Hummer revealed his 2018 Class All-Impact Team, and NC State signee Ricky Person was his running back of choice.

Running Back

Ricky Person, NC State: There won’t be a shortage of running backs who can contribute right away, but Person is the best combination of talent and opportunity. 247Sports’ No. 2 overall running back, Person (6-foot-2) is a big-bodied playmaker blessed with great quickness to go along with a willing physicality. Person is a huge get for the Wolfpack, especially with Nyheim Hines and Jaylen Samuels (1,515 yards, 24 TDs between them) both headed to the NFL. An early enrollee, watch for Person to emerge as NC State’s feature back by the time 2018 comes to an end.

Also Look Out For: Lorenzo Lingard (Miami), Harold Joiner/Asa Martin (Auburn), Keaontay Ingram (Texas), Jamal Elliott (Oregon), Zamir White/James Cook (Georgia), Craig Williams (Baylor) (247)

ON3 ranks Pavey as the #4 player in the state of Kentucky (Robert A. Taft High/Burlington, KY)

NC State has already made quite the impression. They only offered him on April 24th. Getting an Official Visit scheduled a week after offering a player is a good sign.

When Pavey released his Top-8 back in February, NC State was obviously on the list. It consisted of Miami (OH), Toledo, Boston College, West Virginia, Pitt, Cincinnati, Indiana and Purdue. Wisconsin is also new to the scene, offering Pavey on April 21st.

As a Junior, Pavey had 46 tackles 7.5 sacks and 9 tackles for loss.

4-Star Safety Jontae Gilbert Has Locked in an Official Visit to NC State

Published

on

4-Star 2025 Safety Jontae Gilbert (6’1″/180) confirmed with me that he has locked in an Official Visit to NC State for the weekend of September 27-29, and he plans for it to be his last Official Visit.

Back in July of 2022, Gilbert committed to Ohio St., but last July he decommitted from the Buckeyes.

Gilbert also has Official Visits scheduled for UCF, South Carolina and USC.

At one point, Gilbert was a 5-star prospect, but now he is a consensus 4-star prospect, and a consensus Top-275 player. Rivals ranks him as the #70 overall player nationally in the 2025 recruiting class, and the #8 player in the state of Georgia.

NC State offered Gilbert in April of last year.

Recently, he has taken unofficial visits to, or been visited by Louisville, Auburn, Tennessee, Georgia St., Oregon, Clemson, Texas and South Carolina.

While he doesn’t have an Official Visit set up with Georgia, the Bulldogs are obviously a big player in Gilbert’s recruitment.

Gilbert plays for Douglass High School in Atlanta, Georgia.
